I read most of the stuff about DAT files and the problems people have to either opening them or converting them! I also tried to convert a file but have given up after almost downloading the entire internet and still can't open or convert the file. I've downloaded the file via my Temporory Files after watching a streaming movie so, I pressume that's where the problem is. Would appreciate if somebody can confirm that when they talk about DAT files they don't include streaming movies or am I missing something? Thanks, John

.dat files can be so many things...

Streaming movie you say? I have no idea how to convert it, but you can try this:
Just in case you should make backup first.... then rename xxxxx.dat something like test.avi and then open the AVI using VirtualDub.
VirtualDub will (or it should) fix that file. After that you can save it .

I tried it like you have suggested but it still didn't open? However, when I saved the Temporary Internet File to My Favourites and clicked on that it opens playing in Windows Media Player even though I have deleted all my temporary files....so, I'm completely confused now!

I finally found software that converts stream video (DAT) to ASF successfully.....if interested here's a copy of the email I've received from Applian.com! Regards, John

Hi John,

What you're describing is exactly what Replay AV is for. It stream captures audio and video clips and can also record shows on a schedule. Download and install the free demo of Replay AV and take it for a test drive.

Here is a link to the section of the User Guide that describes how to stream capture video with Replay AV.
