Converting avi to dvd with WinAVI -- problems

Recently I started having problems with my WinAVI not completing a conversion without my computer shutting down. I have since upgraded to the newest winAVI release and now they convert, but I end up with video streams that are right side on the left, left side on the right, and the images appear in strips. I've tried updating my codec, thinking it was just my viewer... no difference. I can't even burn them anymore. Is there anything I can do? Any program I can use that will work better? Am i just a total n00b?
