I use DVD Shrink for ripping and Nero 7.0 Ultra for burning. Shrink still seems to analyze and encode succesfully for me. But recently, when it states "Please insert an empty disk" -- and I put in a blank DVD-R -- it isn't being read. The little disk logo will sometimes appear on the screen once, twice, even three times, both nothing happens. (The screen continues to read: "Checking disks. . . . ")
Even DVDs I backed up successfully a month ago, can't be backed up now.

Is this a problem with the DVD I'm trying to back up? Shrink? Nero? or my six-month-old computer?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (I'm a total newbie at this!)

Hi luketelst
You may just need a firmware update for your burner.
Can also be the media you are using too.

Best bet - post the last Nero log. Just be sure to edit the serial # out. Usually begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C and is at the top of each log.

The log will give us the info above and a bit more to see what's going on.

You can find it here: program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory.

Thanks, Binkie, for replying so quickly.

You are dealing with a total newbie, so please tell me how I begin to look for:

No worries there luketelst :)

On your desktop go to 'my computer' - double click. Then double click on the 'local disc{c:) (c is usually the hard drive).
Now follow the path above (they each are a folder).

Also just post the last log - the logs are usually separated by something like this:
=========***Nero Burning Rom History***=========

Thanks again for the quick reply, Binkie. I just tried again and was unsuccessful. (But, strangely, two hours previously I did do a successful burn.) Go figure. -- Luke

First of all, you didn't provided a full log, that's just partial only. Post the full log, but remember to "edit/delete" your Nero serial in prior to post back.

Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2279 to check for the latest firmware if you haven't done so. Firmware helps to increase the burning performance and media compatibility. It looks like you didn't have a media ready inside the burner.

(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R DL.)

Again, it's asking for a media according to the above message; "Insert empty disc to write to."

**NOTE: this is a full log, just one, not all of the logs.

Here is a recent successfully burned log of mine, you can reference mine to yours and see if you'll notice any differences.

I am a totally raw newbie. So, when I went to the firmware update site, I was immediately intimidated since it stated that it was for "advanced users only." (Sorry. . . that ain't me quite yet !!!)

I just tried burning a DVD and once again was unsuccessful -- it is simply not reading the new blank DVD when I put it in the drive.
Below is the complete log.

If the consensus is that I need a firmware update, then I kindly ask that someone please, please, walk me through the process.

Thanks much! --Luke

Looks like you have a Dell pc & this drive came w/ it so you have the latest firmware for it. Dell is the one who will support this drive.

Now what media are you using? Like Sony +R 16x.

Here's some more suggestions:
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off Need to turn DMA back on for the burner. May be playing into the problem. Here's a step by step guide to follow from alkohol:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Nero API version: 7.0.1.3
Using interface version: 6.3.1.4

Nero can use an update and you still have part of Nero 6 left.
So uninstall Nero (write down serial # 1st) - run the clean tools for 6 & 7 then reinstall Nero. The latest version is 7.5.7.0.
Clean Tools:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Clean_Tools.html

Nero 7.5.7.0:

Thanks for the input, Binkie.

I called Dell today and they are going to send me a new drive and have a technician install it. That should occur Wed. or Thurs. I will wait to see if that works before updating Nero or doing any of the other suggestions.

I will keep you posted on that. I hope you will continue to give me your valuable insight into matters. It's greatly appreciated!

Have you tried to uninstall your driver so your DMA can set it back to DMA Mode (Ultra DMA or 4 or 2)? Sounds like your drive has the latest firmware, so that shoulb be alright.

Below is where I have a question in mind:
Quote:
9:16:27 AM #11 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2578

(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R DL.)

Did you inserted any blank media into your burner prior to the burning process? Plus your missing the "Last possible write address, Last address to be written and there's no showing what type of media you're using."

Thanks to all who have tried to help me. Luckily, it was "just" a bad DVD drive, which was replaced this morning. That seems to have done the trick (the new one is now reading my blank disks quite well!).

Thanks again to those who offered suggestions -- especially Binkie. Until the next time. --Luke

You're welcome Luke :)

My that was fast for the drive replacement!! Glad it did the trick and can't bet the price too :)

Might also want to consider installing Nero - run the clean tools then install the latest version - bunch of fixes and enhancements from your version to the newest. Your choice though.

Happy Burning

Hi fran331
When you click backup in Shrink - hard disk folder should be an opinion under select backup target. Sometimes it's the last option. The movie shouldn't make a diff on if this option is available.
Or did I misunderstand your question?

Ok now I gotcha (misread your post)
The ones you are having trouble w/ have either Macrovision's Ripguard or Sony's ARccOS so shrink can't handle them alone.

So rip to the hard 1st with DVDFab decrypter (free) then open those files in Shrink.
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

Or use RipIt4Me - all free programs too (use shrink, decrypter and fixvts)
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

Or not free but has a 21 day free trial - AnyDVD. You just run in the background w/ Shrink. Very easy.

All the above programs will handle all the latest copy protections.

Give those a go and let us know.
