Went and bought a 15 pack of Maxell DVD-R and I was unable to copy anything. Using DVD Shrink like I always do-kept getting message burn failed illegal disk. Does anyone out there know what this is or has this ever happened to anyone else.

maxell stamps its label on discs from different producers. you probably got a bad batch of CMC Mags or something. get some verbatims or tayo yudens and get back to work. ^.^

Next time, make sure you buy Maxwell - Made in Japan! They are then likely to be Taiyo Yuden disks :)

Maxell, like most brand name media-outsources there media to many different manufacturers. Maxell uses hitachi/ritek/and cmags. They also used some taiyo yuden on their older 4x speed dash media.

You may get hitachi in 1 batch, but ritek or cmags in another. It's usually a firmware issue. A simple firmware update should fix it.

That's why we suggest looking for the spindles that say Made in Japan-for the hitachi maxells. This also works for fuji and sony for their ty media.

It sounds like those maxells didn't burn,so they may still be good. Look at the bottom-dye side of the disc for any actual burning. If not-they're still good and a firmware update may get them to be recognized. It happened to me on some Ritek-G04 maxell -8x gold tops.

A firmare update is an update for your drive that makes sure it can read the newest disks out there.

Go to this site...

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

...and from there you can find your mode/make of drive and download the latest update. Make sure when doing it there is no media in your drive and that you have nothing else running.

Also, you want RPC-2 firmware and if your drive came in the PC then you will want OEM firmware if it is listed..

Eg.
Pioneer DVR-A05/DVR-105 - 1.00, 1.21, 1.30, 1.33 / 1.10 (Sony OEM) / 1.30, 1.33 (Iodata OEM) / 1.30 (Medion OEM)

If you bought the drive seperately, then you want the normal firmware.
