Hi. I'm using Nero VisionV4 to convert some AVIs I have downloaded to DVD format. I'm on an AMD64 with WinXP (Pro) updates current. I have a LiteOn combo drive. I have selected what I think is appropriate for the job in Nero Vision and step through to burn. It says it burns fine. Yet on several AVIs (not all but some) the audio comes out way distorted or it sounds like loud whispering and is intolerable. I'm playing these back on my Philips DVD/VCR combo player. When I take the DVD and place it in the computer drive, the audio is fine/normal. I know there are critical differences between settop DVD players and computer DVD playing.

So I surmise that something is happening in the encoding to audio stage in Nero when the AVI is converted. Before I ruin anymore media, what should I be setting for audio encoding in Nero Vision for an AVI? Maybe there's a software diagnostic I should run first to determine the correct settings in Nero Vision?

Any guidance appreciated. Thank You all.

Further info. Ran DVDInfo. I found that the drive firmware needed updating. I flashed the new version of firmware. I kept all the Nero settings to automatic like I always do. Still cruddy audio. I suspect it's got to be the 2 or 3 AVI files themselves because I have since sucessfully burned others with the new firmware. There is sound but it's way way off - sounds like a "swooshing" noise or the voice is whispering but you can't understand the announcer. On the computer, these all play fine. These movies just won't play audio on my Philips standalone. I even messed with the audio settings on the player, selecting PCM or Bitstream and selecting certain audio language settings. I ran GSpot on them. Seems to be fine.

What do you experts think?

How do I go about checking the audio channel on an AVI?
