when my friend turned on his psp an update for fw 2.00 came up but he took the battery out to stop it, now when he turns it on the poewr light comes on but nothing happens then it turns off again, is it bricked??

If the update was in progress when the battery was removed then the psp is a brick.

no, custom firmware allows you to unbrick your PSP. You needed it installed before the brick.
