Ok, here is the deal. A movie that I loved in theaters, "Brotherhood of the Wolf", was done entirely in french voices with english subtitles. The subtitles were expertly done and were a true translation into english.

I bought the american release on dvd, and they had re-done the subtitles as literal translations, and were completely screwed up.

So, what I want to do is to take a Dual layer DVD, extract the subtitle files, edit the words in the file, and then re-burn the disc onto a dual layer.

I have a dual layer burner, DVD Decrypter and imgburn, but have never used dvdshrink or dvdrebuilder, or any other programs.

Essentially, I just want to change the words themselves, not the timing, font, or anything else.

Help?

If you want to edit the subtitles and burn a new DVD then you need to rip the subtitles from the original DVD into text format, like .srt. Then you would Demux out the video and audio streams from the DVD.

So then you would have the video stream, audio stream and a text file of the subs. Since you are not changing timings on the subs you could use something as simple as Notepad to edit the subtitles. Then you would convert that edited text file to .sup format so you could put it back together with the video and audio to re-author a new DVD.

There's more than one way to do all these steps, everyone has their favorite software. To rip the subs I like to use Subrip. I use Txt2sup to then convert the srt to sup. To Demux out the video and audio from the original DVD I use PGCDemux or VOBEdit. I use Muxman or IFOEdit to remux. Then burn the new DVD.
