Secondary IDE not able to set to DMA

I need some help here! I am not too familiar with all this stuff, but I have been reading up on the DMA vs PIO setting for the IDE and have tried to no avail to change my secondary to DMA. I have gone to the device manager and clicked on secondary IDE, tried to change it but it didn't take. Then, I uninstalled the driver and rebooted. Still didn't work. I changed it to DMA if available, but it didn't change the current out of PIO so I uninstalled and rebooted. Still didn't change. Then I uninstalled the driver again as well as the cd/dvd rom drive and rebooted. However, the secondary is still set to PIO under current even though the transfer mode is set to DMA if available. Is there any way I can change this? Thanks for all your help!
