Hi,
Have raised this on another forum and exhaused suggestions then found this one where similar problems are to be found.
From reading previous post on here it looks like the firmware has got f**ked but if someone could read through the story so far I would like to get this confirmed. Both drives used to work perfectly with all my software.
Sorry its a bit long but hopefully you will have the answer.

My son very kindly installed some software that came with an MP4 player form China via eBay. (Dispite the fact that I have told him never to load software to my computer).
Since then neither of the DVD drives one rom one ram have worked. - wont read anything from either cd or dvd disks.

This is what I have tried:
Tried to remove chinese software but the uninstaller came back reporting a fatal error.
Deleted software from programes directory manually but not edited the registry because I dont like poking about in there.
Uninstalled the devices in device manager.
Replaced all the drivers that device manager drive properties was showing as used (from another PC.)
Physically disconnected the drives both power and ribbon cable.
Restarted XP and then shut it down before reconnecting the drives.

So now I have both drives showing in explorer.
Device manager says they are both working normally.
Nero burning software will eject and close the draws.
The drive access light comes on when you insert a disk.
Neither drive will read the content of the disk.

I am about to remove a drive and try it in another PC to prove that it is not faulty but it feels like a driver problem to me rather than a hardware fault.

Every thing else seems OK - thankfully!
Any suggestion.
Thanks.

REPLY- Was Nero upgraded? without doing an uninstall and re-install?

No I have not changed Nero.
I just used it to prove that a program can access some of the drives functionality.

REPLY- Take a look at the IDE/Atapi Controller properties in System/Hardware/Device Manager, it's possible the "mode" has been changed, if it's DMA, switch it to PIO and/or vice versa.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Tried that but it made no difference.

REPLY- You've not mentioned it in what you have tried, how about a rolback to before the software was installed?

Unfortunately, I dont have any system restore points going that far back.
It happened about 3-4 weeks ago but I only got to find out at the weekend when I needed to burn a CD.
The driver rollback wont work either because I have tried several times to change the driver.

REPLY- Set Bios to boot to one of the drives, put a bootable disk in and restart - last ditch, it's been known to get XP to wake up and realise that it does actually have working ROMs.

Tried that but still no joy.
Have physically moved drives to another computer with a different version of XP professional and guess what they still wont read or write.
This seems to suggest to me that the firmware in the drives themselves has been corrupted. Any other opinions?
Anyone know how to replace firmware?

This is what I have ended up with.
Windows knows the drives are there and device manager is reporting all is well.
When you insert a disk the disk symbol flashes next to the cursor.
You can use the right click eject to open the drive door.
Click on the drive in explorer and an explorer window opens but no files showing.

REPLY- Eww. Pass. Firmware update, Device Manager, find the entry for your drives, double-click and click the Settings tab. Look for the firmware version and drive model numbers listed there available on your drive manufacturer's website<s>, and, if available, pull it down - follow the instructions to flash! One thing, have you run a virus/trojan scan since all this started?

Yes got and used the latest version of AVG.
But have used the previous version for a long time now.
Thanks for your help.
