For all of you Wii experts I need some help on what to buy for X-mas morning(Don't need to worry about a Wii preorder at least). I want to buy my son(6yrs old) a Wii - He is currently still playing a SNES, and also has a DS. But along with the Wii I need to buy some additional controllers for my other 2 daughters to play as well. First of all, - I know they are offering a standard wired controller to play older games, but isn't it true that the wireless motion controller can also be used as a traditional controller as well(if you turn it sideways)- Would the nunchuck be used too in a traditional role since it has an analog stick on it. Is this true, as I am trying to figure out how many controllers of each I can run - I have heard 4 but is that total(wired and wireless). Since the Wii has 2 usb ports I am assuming you can use a total of 2 wired, but then can you use 4 wireless as well. Since the Wireless are running $60(with the nunchuck) I might not go with a total of 4 of these since I am assuming most games are 2 players at most. I also thought I read that a DS can be used with the wii - how will that work.
The Nintendo site has very basic info about the system since they are just introducing it, so any help you can provide on this would be great.
Thanks,

wii has 4 game cube controller ports and can support 4 wii controlers with blue tooth. If you plan on getting extra controllers just know that it will cost you: $40 for controller + $20 for nunchuck. Im pretty sure you will need the classic controler to use the virtual console, and the main reason why is probably just to get some more money out of you.
X2 3800, A8n deluxe motherboard, 7800GT, Xion 2 case
2GB Patriot DDR 400, Audigy 2 ZS gamer, 400GB SATA RAID 0
games Im looking forward to: bioshock, SSBB, enemy territory quake wars, halo 3
currently playing: command and conquer 3, supreme commander, counter strike, shivering isles

Unless you are playing GCN games, the Wii is completely wireless. For GCN games, you plug in any hardware you have to the Wii's GCN hardware ports. For anything else, it all goes through the Wii-mote, which is wireless. The nunchuk attaches to the wii-mote, as does the classic controller (for VC (virtual console) games that are not NES titles.)
To avoid confustion, read again that the Wii-mote is wireless, so any attachment via the wii-mote will only be wired to it and not the Wii console itself. (so, to respond to one of your concerns, the Virtual Controller will attach via wire connection to the wireless wii-mote)
The Wii-mote can be turned sideways for select Wii titles as well as all NES titles released on the Virtual Console.
The DS can be used with a Wii, but I havn't heard of any title yet that boasts the Wii-DS connectivity. The DS will also be able to download updates with the Wii's DirectConnect24 service, but again, I havn't heard of any title that has yet to make use of the feature.
The USB ports you mention have no official use besides a USB LAN adaptor to utilize the Nintendo Wifi connection.
I'll get back to you tomorrow, as I am completely annihilated off of New Belgiums' Sunchine and PBR. If you can make sense of the post, than kudos to both you and me. :-D

So if I am using the virtual console I still would need a Wii mote anyways even if I wanted to use a classic controller(But I could use jsut the Wii remote for NES games). As far as you know, are there any games planned that would be more than 2 players.
So GCN games play directly(Will not be offered through virtual console), but they only work with GCN Controllers(And I could use an old or third party one if I want right)?
Another question - I had heard somewhere that the Wii is planning on offering internet browsing through an Oprah browser download - Any confirmed info on that.
My biggest problem is finding a decent age approriate game at luanch for my 6 year old. I would love to get him a first person shooter(like Red Steel) but they are all teen - Any ideas of a first person shooter that kills aliens or something with no gore?

Try Zelda, it's not an FPS; but 'family friendly' fps games are rare on any console. Zelda is getting rave reviews all over the net.
In March they launch Metroid, which is a great one to look into, that should be very agreeable to you and your kids.

For the Virtual Console or just in general? For the Virtual console, I suppose any game that was more than 2 players would be the exact same. For the Wii, Red Steel is multiplayer, as well as mario strikers, pokemon stadium (wifi multiplayer), wii sports, excite truck... that's all I can think of for now.

Correct.

Opera did make a version of it's browser for the Wii. You'll need to hook your Wii up to the internet and download the browser. It will be free to download until June 2007, and then it will cost you Wii points (the currency for VC games as well) to download it. I do not know if you will have to re-download (and thus, purchase) the browser if you used it before June 2007.

Metroid Prime is pretty easy on the gore, but it's really complicated and I highly doubt your child would enjoy it.
I think Red Steel is the fps title with the least amount of gore. Call of Duty (a WWII fps) is sure to have lots of blood, Far Cry is brutal, and splinter cell is rated M.
A shooting game offered by nintendo is Batallion Wars, although it is a third person shooter, not first. But it is family-friendly, and you would have as much fun playing it as your child.
