Has anyone purchased the Ativa DVDs at OD. Any idea on who makes them? How have they burned?

If these are the ones:

http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?leve...0Pack%20Of%2050

They are too expensive as you can 100 pack spindles of Verbatims for just a few dollars more or 100 pack 8X Taiyo Yudens for about the same price. Why take the chance.

They are 17.99 for 100 this week before the holiday. Maybe these will become the new OD house brand?

ERICST-yeah But If officedepot is still putting out media under their label ! And they don't want to put the ativa disc out under their own name ? I would suspect that they are probably CMC or maybe worse ? atleast With OD baranded media you usually get RItek or Ricohjpn 's Decent media ( No not taiyo or Verbatim quality but decent enough) so far no-one has posted A Ativa media code ! I could be wrong they may be ritek or ricohjpns But if cheap disc are what you are after BestBuy is having the DYNEX onsale on Black friday for $4.99 per 100 you could get 300 for the price of 100 ativa's And unfortunately I don't know who makes DYNEX media either Good luck ERICST and let us know what you find out !

But they have to work. How many times on this forum do we see folks complain about, skipping, freezing, pixilation, won't play at the end etc. Then they go on to say all the things they've tried to correct the problem, different software, FW updates, cleantools, registry cleaners, re-installation, re-formats when all they needed was some decent media to start with.

$17.99 for 100 plus sales tax comes to about $20 in my area. I just got 100 8X Taiyo Yuden's shipped right to my door for $27 and I didn't have to get in my car, drive to the store, find them (get there early if it's a Best Buy special), wait in a line to pay for them. And obviously the resultant burn quality is excellant. My time, peace of mind and burn quality is easily worth 7 cents.

MysticE- Indeed ! well said just returned from both BestBuy & Officedepot ! Looked @ the Ativa's ( well as much as one can look through an unopened package ) They look okay about like any other packaged brand but Luckily My verbatim addiction had already manifested istelf already so I was able too bypass tempation ! & now that we know who makes them we won't be tempted at all !bY ATIVA atleast ! Hopefully Officedepot will stick with the Ritek & Ricohjpn tag team for their own OfficeDepot Branded media ( & yes I understand that Ativa is their brand too! ) Ritek ^ Ricohjpn May not be Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims quality wise but they're atleast usable ! But I also know that some members swear by them Ritek & Ricohjpn & some swear @ them Guess it depends on the deck you have ! Now has anybody tried the DYNEX's Bestbuy is going to have for like $4.99 per 100ct.spindle on Black Friday ! I know not to expect Taiyo's or verbatims - But one could hope for Ritek or Ricoh's maybe ? I almost bought a 10pk today to try but 10 for 11.00 even in DVD cases is rich when you can buy 50 verbatims for $12.99 so I bought 2 tubs of verbatims instead ! ERICST- It says something about 100 Quality Guarantee on the wrapper if you have your receipt take it back ! tell 'em your burner /set top recorder does'nt like them or something see atleast if they'll let you swap out for some real Officedepot media or some other recognized brand like Sony or Maxells ( japanese if you can ) Officedepot carries the maxell printables and a lot of them are MIJ usually 25 packs though ! Hey it's worth a shot right ! Well good luck ERICST & let us know how you make out ! Ciao!

ERICST...Did you buy the + or - discs? What is the CMC code? Possibly the quality of CMC discs are going up? Burn away and give them to the kids. You never know it may be CMCs latest greatest formulation on these discs or Office Depot just wanted some lower priced media to be competetive with the other stores. Also it could be worse media than CMC, like MUST 003 or Optodisc or Plasmon. The quality of CMCs will get better with time.

They were +R MO1 and burned three so far with no trouble. But have not watch the burn. Do you think they would take them back If I told them the first three were coasters?

ERICST- Worth a try - If nothing else get a store credit maybe & get some Verbatims , sony's or Maxell Mij's ! On the officedepot media - Those who had problems were the officedepot disc + or - & what did the mid code read ? Ritek , Ricohjpn or Other? You may have just gotten a bad spindle ? it happens !

@chayne04

What I was trying to say about OD was not to buy, the Maxell +RX16 made in Taiwan there, because they are CMC Mags, I could have worded it better. I buy the OD store brand 8X +Rs for my daughter and they are good media which code out as Ritek 03s.

My daughter called from OD wondering if I wanted the Ativa DVD blanks. I am planning on buying my first DVD burner soon and wasn't sure what to buy -R or the +R format. Do most burners/players handle both formats? Is there an advantage with one vs the other? After reading the posts I've decided to go with Verbatim. BTW I'm looking at the Philips DVR as my burner although it doesn't have the "catch up" feature.

Online Best Buy have 50 paks on sale for $12.99. Is this a good price? I'd have to order online as I'm 100 miles from the nearest BB.

Thanks! Steve

Either are excellent - The advantage in the DVD+R media is the ability to Booktype the media to DVD -ROM ! basically if your burner is capable of this what it does is put write a code on your DVD media that tells your player /drive that it is a DVD-Rom instead of a DVDR - recorded disc - Therefore It should play in any player or drive that will play a Commercially made DVD movie or Game - Which are Pressed /stamped somewhat like CD's or Vinyl Records were! as opposed to recorderd/burned as your homemade ones will be ! You can only do this process with DVD+R media and only if your burner is set up to do it or Has it's firmware Hacked or modified to do so ! A DVD+R booktyped top DVD-ROM is as compatible as you can make your disc be short of an original DVD! Otherwise if you get a good deal on DVD-R you can use them as well - the order goes like this - on the compatability scale - 1.Booktyped DVD+R Media ,2.DVD-R media , 3.DVD+R media - not booktyped ! Keep in mind thisa is a oversimplification of this topic Bookyping as there are other members who caould explain it more detailed and eloquently than I , but this should get you started ! Long story short if your not going to booktype your disc their is no great advantage to DVD+R unless it is alll you have on hand or you got a great deal on it ! also for whatever reason if your buying media online - DVD+R media tends to be more expensive ! Vs. branded media bought in a traditional outlet or store Why ? not really sure but thought you'd wanna know that too ! Good luck & god bless - Happy Thanksgiving !

@Yamaha102

You may be 100 miles from BB, but do you have an Office Max nearby? Remember, Office Max(among some other stores that carry Verbatim) pricematch. Its a really good way to save some money, as shipping can make some deals not a deal at all. Good luck!

@ERICST

The Verbatims MIT (MCCs) are fine. I don't believe Verbatim has a Japan manufacturer. I know the Verbatim DL +Rs, which are the best, are made in Singapore. If I'm incorrect, please someone let us know!
