Never. The DVD technology doesn't allow this to happen, ever. More likely is that the next format which comes after DVD, probably Blu-Ray, will take the storage size to 20-50GB a disc.

First THX for your answer dRD. But i don't agree with you. There already are DVD-9 Duplication Services in the U.S., that backup DVD-9 1:1. So it should exist... no?

They use "real" DVD discs, not DVD-Rs. DVD-Rs structure is somewhat different than that found on "real DVDs". DVD players recognize the DVD-Rs as DVD discs, because the DVD-R disc has some funny way to make the DVD player to think that it is a real disc. And the method how it is done to fool the DVD player, causes the issue that DVD-9 writable discs cannot exist.

And I don't think anyone's gonna invest money to research how to implement writable DVD-9 discs when everybody in the industry knows that DVD's capasity of max. 9GB per side is absolutely out-dated and that Blu-Ray and other blue-laser DVD technologies will debut in next year and would allow 27GB per side.

ok , I C.
Just a last question : Do you backup DVD-9 on 2 DVD-R's? Is the menu present on the 2 discs when burned? And when we select on the Menu a chapter to read that is not on this DVD-R but on the other, what happens? BUG?

blu-ray? i think i have heard of this. Another sceme by the entertainment industry to get more money from us. Just when everyone owns a dvd player and has a substantial dvd collection, the industry wants to force us to buy another device, which is not backwards compatible with the dvd's we use now. That's bullshit.

It took decades to get from vhs to dvd, but now we hafta re-buy our movies(or re-copy, heh heh), every 5 years or so.

bullshit i say

Anh, actually entertainment industry opposes the idea of Blu-Ray -- even DVD, when it was invented, had to be scaled down: originally manufacturers wanted to give us an excellent video quality, but entertainment industry opposed and wanted crappier quality. Eventually DVD is compromise between these -- almost excellent quality, but not quite.

Blu-Ray is implemented in Japan, because Japanese consumers want to record 100% perfect quality digiTV broadcasts -- that is almost 3x times higher resolution than DVD -- and it requires helluva lot more storage space, therefor Blu-Ray / blue-laser disc is required.

hmmm maybe it wasn't blu-ray i heard about. But there is a new disc format coming out within the next year or two which is scheduled to REPLACE dvd.

Sony and microsoft are collaborating on this one, together. They are planning to basically force us to purchase this new kind of disc hardware, it may be an improved version of dvd.

val10: They're not burned, they're pressed in CD/DVD manufacturing plants. And the technology they use is dual layer technology, which means that they have two layers of data pressed on them for each side -- some older DVD players experienced a short, few second, gap when the layer changed in middle of the movie.

I think you'll find that it is already possible to burn 9.4 GB discs quite easily so long as you have sufficient resources. A DVD authoring drive should do the trick. These cost in excess of $5000 and are used on a regular basis in the far-east where dvd copying is very common place. The blank DVD discs themselves are harder to come by, but, if you've found the drive, then you've probably also found somewhere to find the discs ;)

Take Care all.

wolfgunge: But what I've understood is that DVD-A discs can't be read with stand-alones, but they are used as "DVD images" for manufacturing plants instead or am I totally wrong now?

Thank you for your responses. What I have found meanwhile is: http://www.sanyolaserproducts.com/products/production.htm
Dvd authoring gear produces output for further industrial production and replication.
It seems that is really impossible to copy a dvd unless you buy a genuine factory.
Have I well understood?

or this :)
http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat/Products/dvd/f_lq-vd2000s.html

also, i could swear that the discs work :) (you can usually find a few DVD-A films on ebay, such as the lord of the rings, i've tried it and it works fine on everything (even ps2). if ur in london, a quick trip to portobello market on most saturdays will yield some authored discs from the far-east, although i must state that I DO NOT endorse any such activities.)

i'm sorry for my slight pricing error ;) (there is a pioneer drive i believe though, that is in the $5k ish price range...)

Take care all
