I really dont care. It could be named the Nintendo Pukefart for all I care. Its an awesome and VERY unique system.

i think the name "wii" emphasizes the word "we" as in the all of us . This system is for everyone. Could be an international gaming console.

Great effort, really, great effort. And I would believe you, had I not been paying attention when Nintendo announced it, and subsequently spent the next 72 hours explaining it to every major publication in the universe.
It is a title of Japanese origin, with multiple reasons, none of which is a 'clever' acronym.
The Wii is the japanese name of a constellation, additionally "ii" in Japan is a well-known symbol for happiness. They chose the title for those two reasons. It was all over the net for the first week after they announced the name. Unfortunately, a lot of the people in the Wii board now weren't really paying attention at the time, this section didn't even exist; naturally.
As for why they kept the title here, they were apparently tired of being the only manufacturer to give different names to their systems in each country; so they stopped, and naturally there's always someone who's going to complain.
But quite frankly, I'm going to strongly agree with esrever on this one; pukefart would have worked no different for me, because the system is incredibly fun, I don't enjoy my 360 this much, and I wouldn't enjoy a PS3 this much either.

according to nintendo power, wii with the 2 i's that sort of look like people is supposed to be like people socializing and playing together.

Both my names are Wii. I take high offense to this entire thread. How dare you all insult the name of Wii Wii! I was in the military too; few men dared disrespect the title of Lt. Major Wii. Also, my big brother, born in France, before my family came to America is feared throughout the underworld; perhaps you know the name Oui Wii.
I thought as much, tremble before the mighty Wii Wii!
I am so terribly sorry to have hit an all time high in irrelevance; but I just couldn't help it. Also, if you're in the armed forces, I mean no disrespect to you for serving your country, but hey, the title of Lt. Major Wii just sounded too good to pass up, besides I know so little about military status, that I'm honestly not even sure whether that's a real rank or not, it just popped into my head.

Ya at first when I heard the new system Nintendo was comming out with was gonna be called Wii i hated the name. But no the name have grown on me and I like it alot now Wii it is also spelled cool. haha.
