I'm having some problems with burning a DVD with Nero. I'm noticing that my read buffer is dropping to 0% and slowing everything to a crawl, and also that my 2 MB buffer has been dropping dangerously low too at times.

Here is what I've been trying:

*BenQ DW 1640 burner, trying at 8x instead of 16x speed
*Verbatim 16x DVD-R Media
*Nero 6.6.05
*Maxtor 80GB 7200 RPM HD
*DMA enabled for both HD and DVD
*HD defragged ~1 month ago
*Burner firmware updated to most recent release
*Large files, most around 350 MB

I'm struggling to come up with any other ideas, and I've tried searching already, so if there are any other suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them.

I also have the log file saved from my last burn, although I can't seem to make much of it.

Thanks for reading!

Well, it looks like you did some research before you posted ;-)

Did you notice the line that mentioned not having the HD and burner on the same IDE channel?

You might post your log, someone might see something.

How old is your hard drive--is it making any strange noises? Any external drives attached?

What file types are you using, and are you using Nero Burning ROM?

Nero 7 v7.10.1.0
P4 2.4GHz 1 Gig RAM
NEC ND3550A DVD Burner

My HD and burner on on separate IDE channels. HD is 2-3 years old I believe, never has given me any trouble before.

I'm burning .avi files with Nero 6.6.05 Burning ROM. None of my burns are failing, but I'm just concerned after seeing my read buffer drop to zero all the time, I'm going to have jittery video.

I just defragged the HD again, it was at 22% and after completion dropped down to 13%.

Anyways, here's the log:

Although you're using good quality discs, slow burn to 4X

Although your firmware is current your burner doesnt recognize the discs

I dont believe you can "book type" RW discs.

Thanks for the tips.

When I bring up 'Disc Info' in Nero, it recognizes my media as DVD-R. I can't honestly say I know anything about Book Type, or at least I haven't read up on it lately.

I just did a slow-burn at 4x before you replied. My read buffer was rock-solid at 100%, except for one time it slowly dropped to 20% before going straight back to 100%.

Why shouldn't I be able to burn at at least 8x? It's equivalent to about 11,000 KB/s. I tested the Drive Speed on both my HD partitions, and they came up with 25,000/30,000 KB/s respectively.

The only other idea I can come up with is my RAM, which is only 512 MB, but I've burned media successfully on computers with a lot less than mine.

You will find that most members recommend burning at 4X, unless you are using top quality discs such as Taiyo Yuden...slower burn (4X) less chance of errors.

As was mentioned, your book type situation is a little strange. You have Nero set to set book type according to the recorder. You might change that, or change your recorder so it doesn't try to set a book type on anything except a DVD +R disc. The DVD +R is the only type of media you might want to change to make it more compatible with older set top DVD players. You cannot change the book type on a DVD -R. It should never be trying to change a DVD -R to a DVD +RW, as it is now.

You can change the book type on a DVD +RW, but that normally isn't done since it keeps the media from being re-written by changing it to a DVD-ROM. So, If you have the option on your burner (firmware or another utility), set it to only set DVD +R to DVD-ROM and leave everything else alone. If you can't do that, change the setting in Nero.

I see you also have some other drives attached, if you can, you might disconnect those to see if the read buffer returns to normal.

Thanks for the tip on the drives, I actually had a couple of virtual drives mounted that I forgot about.

As for the Book Type, I changed my Recorder setting in Nero from 'Automatic' to 'Physical Disc Type'. Is that correct, or is there another way of changing it?

I never knew about Nero CD-DVD Speed, but I tried using it and all the discs I've checked have been a 95 in quality, so perhaps I'm just worrying too much!
