Nero 7.5.7.0 Verbatim 16X DVD-R and Hitachi DVP725U

I am trying to figure out why the Verbatim 16X -R dvd's burnt on my Pioneer DVDR-111D are not playing on the stand alone Hitachi DVP725U player we have. The same video burnt on the same disks using a Lite-on player but using Nero 6 instead of Nero & played fine.
I tried to set the book type but when I go the the Choose Recorder->options page I don't have any options for Book Type with either my Pioneer 111D or the Liteon 1633(which will not burn 16x-r disks hence my purchase of the Pioneer).
I am looking for any ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem. If it is a case of Nero7 I will go back to Nero6 although I find the Nero7 recode somewhat faster than version 6 was.

Pioneer's don't support booktyping - reason Nero doesn't give an option for it.
The LiteOn will but only +R discs can be booktyped - not -R.
The LiteOn may just need a firmware update - the latest is BSOY:

The Pioneer may too - the latest is 1.23.

You can check which version you have for each drive in Nero. Open SmartStart>NeroToolKit>InfoTool. Pick the drive to check in the dropdown - in the drive tab there is a field there that lists the version you have. If an early version - update the drive(s).
How about the burn speed you are burning at? May just need to take it down a notch.

The lite-no 1633 even with the latest firmware does not support 16X -r. That was why I purchased the Pioneer.
The Pioneer has the latest firmware. First thing I did when I installed it was check for updates to firmware.
As to taking it down a notch, that would be defeating the reason for the purchase of the second DVD writer. My lite-on is still in very good condition and handles up to 8x -r disks of all kinds including the cheapest of noname disks. As for the + R, the stand alone DVD player I use doesn't read +r.
I was just wondering if anyone else had the same problem with the Pioneer 111 or if I had a dud burner.
One of the disks that the Hitachi would not read was tryed in a fairly new Sony stand alone player and worked. I guess the next question is are three and four year old stand alone dvd players having problems with reading some of the types of media and burner combinations.

Yes players can be picky - older ones even more so.
To see if it's the drive or the player - play the disc back in the burner. If it plays in there than pointing to the player.
Your choice on taking a burn speed down a notch - it may work for some of the players.
The LiteOn does booktype so you could always try +R media w/ it.
I have SOHW 832 (older) and it's fine w/ +R or -R 16x media but I only use Taiyo or Verbatim.

Thanks. I had a guy at work try the same burnt disk that wouldn't play on the Hitachi on his Sony and it worked. The Hitachi only likes -R dvds so I have not bothered with +r ones.
The funny thing is the Hitachi seems to like the 16X -r when burnt on the my friend's lite-on which is a model newer than mine. WEIRD. If it had rejected the 16x he burnt I would have put it down to the Hitachi and left it at that. This way it had me wondering if there was something weird about my new burner.

It's sounding like the Hitachi just not liking the burned dvd's from the Pioneer since they are playing on other players.
Check with your friend on what burn speed he used and what was the media.
I have a Pioneer too - older than yours and I usually burn at 8x or 12x on it. But no Hitachi player.

That's easy. I did the burn. I just did a copy of the disk I had burnt at 16x on the Pioneer onto another verbatum disk from the same spindle and burnt it at 16x. You may be right though about the Hitachi. Now I'm wondering which stand alone dvd players have the best playback with the widest variety of media.

That's the million dollar question :)
Newer ones - like the last couple of years seem better compatibility wise on the different media and burners. Just my experience.
Plus they're so cheap now!

Having the same problem burning with my Pioneer. However, I believe it is the media, not the drive.
I use Memorex exclusively. I was using 8x-R and never had a "coaster" problem. When I was forced to start buying 16x-R is when my problems began. I went out and bought the new Pioneer 16X+/-R drive, gave the old 8x to #1 son, and proceeded to make about 2 dozen coasters - all in really nice packaging with custom labels too!
Needless to say, I was stunned! So, I had to burn all of them again.
I took a known-good 8x-R copy of the show and made a copy with Nero. I found a dusty spindle of 8x disks and burned 24 new CD using the verify data option. Yes, this took forever but I had absolutely no problems.
I just finished a new show and put them all on 16x-R media using 8x burn from Adobe Encore figuring that the 16x Her player is only 3 years old. However, they all played fine in my player and in my drive. My player is a 5-year-old Panasonic RV32. Is has never had a problem playing anything - 16x-R included.
So, in short, I'm still left in a quandary. I will try making a copy of the DVD (image) and burning it using Nero to see if that solves the problem.
The only problem is that it usually takes an hour of watching the same show,(DVD) over and over, to tell if you have a write problem or not. I usually have the show memorized by the time I?m finished.
My early read on this is that 16x-R disks are not compatible with a good many players over 3 years old. if this is true it is a MAJOR industry problem.
