I haven't got around to downloading a VC game yet and I believe they are tied to the console that they are downloaded on.

Anyone downloaded one and took a look at the file yet? Just wondered how hard they are going to be to crack so we can play them on our friends consoles.

Seems kinda dumb that I have to take my console over to a friends house to play a game I downloaded.

I would think your controller (Which holds your Mii's) would be able to link up with Nintendo's online service, to detect which games you have paid for. But then again, it provides a slightly scary gateway for Nintendo; because people might find a way to 'share' VC games. So it makes a LOT of sense that Nintendo hasn't done this yet.

you can and cannot backup console games

yes you can copy games to the sd memory card yes you can access the memory card on a pc but no you cannot back up the game file certain files are locked to the wii console and certain titles are not for example you can copy zelda completly but you cannot copy super mario 64 for some reason they have a locked data.bin file inside the folder that you cannot open or copy to a computer and i have tried this worse if you have a sd memory card connected to the wii the only way i have found to reformat the memory stck is by using a digital camera and selecting the format option on the digital camera because once the sd card has data on it from nintendo you cannot format the sd card on any device except a digital camera i tried to format it on a computer and the computer frooze then gave me the error certain files on this pc cannot be formatted because the file is locked or currupted

so like i said it depends

I bet you could format it on Linux without problems. I'm not running Linux so I can't say for sure, but I'm thinking it probably has a different way of reading data, even if Windows thinks it's locked.

The linux thing is very likely correct. Not to mention, someone could probably make a program to read it.

HOWEVER: It seems that Nintendo actually locks the game to the individual console when you download it. It's a much similar protection to what Verizon does by using Brew *Shudder*. It ensures a huge block on potential illegal filesharing, because they actually encode YOUR username and system ID into the game itself as they give it to you. That way you can't transfer or share the game.

Kind of a crazy amount of trouble to go through on that; but I'm sure someone will crack it soon, it's inevitable.
