I have a question... why is it my (Daewoo) dvd player can play purchased dvd movies but won't play a movie backed up on a dual layer disc? Are they not both dual layer type discs?

What brand name are your discs? At this time, the only reliable dl discs are Verbatim +R. It's also a good idea to set the Booktype to DVD-ROM.
