first i would like to say i have done a some research, i did search the forums, which got me on the right track but for some reason its still not working the way its supposed to.
basically what is happening is that when i burn audio disks, they skip in random spots. i saw some posts on DMA, i noticed that it wasnt working right, found out that i had primary master set as none, instead of auto in bios, but for some reason windows detected it anyway. once i fixed that, and reinstalled the ide drivers and dvd rom driver, windows say'd it was using dma. i was running some tests with Nero cd-dvd speed, and at the begining the benchmark was all messed up, not even the line was clear, now it will eventually hit 40x write (which is the max speed for my drive) where before it hung around 16x bouncing around. so at that point i thought it was fixed. then i burned a cd to see if dma was on in the logs, and it wasnt.
any ideas? i'll post the log for you guys to look at. thanks for your help.

Hello.

Here's a couples of guides for fixing and checking for the DMA transfer mode for your drives:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

I should note that some drivers do not report DMA status correctly to Nero. Thus you have to use device manager to check the current status yourself per the links above. Based on your setup I doubt that Nero will correctly report the DMA status. Thus if you inspect via Device Manager and all is well with DMA, it probably is, regardless of what Nero says.

DMA transfer mode will revert to the much slower PIO transfer mode if there are communication problems on the bus. If you reset to DMA transfer mode and then you revert to PIO mode, there is something amiss on the bus.

The skipping could be due to the media you're using which is manufactured by a low quality manufacturer. The skippig could also be due to a dirty lens or other malfunction in the player.

Just to add to what has been recommended

Quote:
CDR code: 00 97 26 66; OSJ entry from: CMC Magnetics Corporation
Not good quality discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in japan)

You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero, to remove, run this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

This is something I learned after I posted my first ever thread at AD some 18 months ago. creaky, read my rather lengthy log, I had Roxio installed and I heeded his advice to remove it, so if you see

File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
then you know what it is.

thank you for your reply's, and you actually answered my followup question too. well, in order for Nero to say dma was on, i had to use microsoft drivers for my ide driver. and judging by what you said, even though Nero said that dma was off it was probably on judging by the benchmarks i was getting. once i fixed it inthe bios, windows said it was on, but Nero still said it was off.
now would i be better off updating back to the nvidia drivers? or does Nero run differently depending on weather dma is on or off?
also, i dont ever recal having roxio on here, but i used that uninstaller anyway.
but either way, my cd's dont skip anymore, (you should have seen that first benchmark, the lines on the graph were all over the place, and never went above 16x) well, i thought i was using "OK" cd's, they are philips 52x. i personally like verbatim, but they arent that easy to find, and i had to go out and buy these in a pinch.
if you have any other tips to help me optimize Nero please let me know.
thanks

Jumping in.

The Roxio driver is sometimes used by other software developers and can be installed by programs other than Roxio's.

If device manager says that DMA is on, it's on regardless of what Nero reports.

I think your problem was likely caused by your media and not your IDE drivers. I'd say if you want to use the nvidia drivers, go ahead, but realize Nero won't report DMA correctly.
