The drive no longer recognizes CD's at all. It says insert disc when a disc is inserted. The only discs it recognizes are DVD's. I found a website http://www.css.ap.sony.com/consumer/temp...e&Model=CRX320A that will allow you to update the firmware in the drive. I updated the firmware and it still will not recognize cd's. Is this drive dead? Does it need new drivers? I cannot find new drivers for it anywhere. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Same problem here. Occured after installing Nero. Once I have repaired it by System Restore, but it has occured again, and nothing helps. I updated firmware, changed DMA settings, reinstalled fresh versions of Win XP 32, Win xp 64 on different partitions. I have AMD 64 bit Athlon on Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard. Another guy with same mother and proc. has had the same problem, but no solution http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:yQj...=1&client=opera He even purchased a new Combo drive, only to find the same problem.

You could try the Upper and Lower filters trick:

It is a Windows thing, losing drives when installing/un-installing burning software?

If the drives are still listed in the Device Manager, delete them then carefully follow this fix:

"Upper/Lower Filters:

a. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
b. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
c. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
d. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
e. Expand the "Control" Key
f. Expand the "Class" Key
g. Look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
h. Highlight this key by left clicking once on it
i. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
j. Exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer"
