The 'Best' way to play homebrew?

I've been reading this forum and various other websites in search for the 'Best' method to play homebrew games. It seems like there are advantages and disadvantages to each route you can take.
For me (and as it seems, most of the community as well), things that it should have are:
- Ability to play MP3/Video
- Ability to play DS ROMS
- Ability to play GBA ROMS
Things that would be 'very good to have'
- Nothing stick out of the DS Lite (from either slot)
- Use just the small/top DS slot, and not use both slots
Basically what I would really like is, nothing sticking out, plays media (mp3/video), DS and GBA roms (maybe even Nintendo), all on the DS Lite.
What is the best solution for the community looking for these features? I understand that nothing sticking out, GBA, and using only the top slot is probably not going to happen, but GBA + NDS roms with nothing sticking out would be very nice, on a DS Lite.

I should also mention that it should not have any delay/lag during GBA / NDS rom gameplay. Lower power consumption a plus :)
There really should be a thread/table that lists the compatibility of each device, against the rest.

well.. the problem comes in when you add in the GBA roms. Because of that, you cannot have a slot 1 device - GBA games haven't been patched to work with slot 1 devices, however DS games have been patched to work with slot 2 (gba slot) devices.
The best bet for you from what it sounds is the M3. It uses expandable memory (external media card) which allows for pretty much limitless expansion
DS Lite -> get the M3 Lite.
Since you want to play GBA, do not get the Professional version - it only plays DS games and very, very few GBA games. Original has 99% compatibility with both DS and GBA

Wow, thank you SO much for the quick reply and incredibly useful information. I was under the impression that all cards that fit perfectly in the DS (not sticking out), were for DS games only, and did not support GBA.
It seems like the M3 Lite + Passcard (not sure which passcard I need? Seems like Passcard3.) will do everything as above, but take up two slots instead of just the top. But if nothing is 'sticking out', then there is no issue at all.
I thank you again for the response and the information. Please post here if anyone has any more information, I'm pretty sure I'll pickup an M3 once I find a good price and a reliable site.

One more thing to throw into the mix, will the M3 Perfect /w Passcard 3 be subject to the 32M limit on GBA games, making 90% of GBA roms unplayable?

no.. thats actually the problem with the M3 Pro series :).. which is why they're basically useless for GBA
M3 series (non-Pro) has on board memory specifically for GBA games.. works with 99% of games out there
I always get my stuff from http://www.getyourgameshere.com but it seems like they're sold out of pretty much all M3 stuff right now
Oh.. and regarding the Passcard thing - Passcard3 is the latest and greatest :P.. the equivalent is the Superkey made by the Supercard guys. Literally plug and play with those things

Hats off to you again =) Thanks!
Maybe I'll make a table that shows what each device is capable of and what its requirements are just to make things easier on others.

Seems to have the M3 Perfect Lite (microsd), with Passcard 3, $88.
If anyone has had experiences with gameyeeeah, let us know how they are.

I used www.realhotstuff.com. If you're planning to get the M3 + passcard 3 you can actually flash the DS with the FlashMe v7 firmware and not have to use the passcard 3 anymore. Also, I recommend using batchDPG for converison of movie files. It works SO much better than the software that comes with the M3.
