I just bought a HP R340 printer that prints on cd/dvd. I have a HPDVD640 that I burn with, but I'm not sure which printable media is compatable with it...I dont want to buy a spindle and then end up not being able to use them. Is there a link on compatiability or something to that effect.
Thanks

vanhager,
good question dude. tayio and verbs are the way to go.Heres a link to a cool tool for checking the compatability of your drive and the media it supports. it's free. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
it will also tell you if the blank media you purchased is legit.
there are still some un-savory slobs out ther trying to pass off FAKES, but this tool should help you there also.Quote: the golden rule--MIJ or Verbatim MIT.
spot on advise AL.

Also, make sure to update your firmware before doing any burning.
Incase you don't know, firmware is what lets your drive recognise new disks and new burn speeds/stragtegies, to put it simply.
However, before I post a link to an upgrade, I need to know what exact model your dirve is. There are four version of the HPDVD640, an "i", "e", "v" and "c". One of those letters will be next to your drives model number. You can find this out by running the dvd identifier tool that was linked to above ^^^
Also, post your current firmware version too. :-)

Hey Ripper,
I have the 640c and if the identifier says FWCS30..is that the firm ware?
Last time I updated my firmware on a cd burner, it never worked properly after that...must have done something wrong I would think.

Well, that culd be a number of things.
1) Make sure you have nothing else running whilst doing the flash, eg, Firewalls, Virus, Any other apps..
2) Make sure there are no disks in your drive when flashing it.
Here is the latest firmware for the HPDVD640c.

For a more informative answer...
Memorex media is not v good. After about 6 months the data will deteriate and render your disks unreadable. You want Verbatim, Sony or Taiyo Yuden media. Another good brand is Ritek/Ridata.
I'd take those Memorex back and get some decent stuff :-)
Oh, and you don't need printable disks at all, unless you have a printer that is suitable for doing printing to disks and intend to do it. Normal disks are fine!

I would have thought Memorex would have been decent (Is it live, or is it Memorex)..I just grabbed a 10 pack when I scored the printer...
Guess I'll go with one of the others...
Thanks

It's to do with who makes their disks, not really Memorex as a company. That's why they are cheap, cos not as good ;-)
