It really depends. Maxell does have some decent media and they have some junk. I recently got hold of a pack which I forgot I had and decided to ID them. The discs MID out as Ricohjpn-R01-002 which is classified as class 2 media. Class 2 will give you about 90% good burns. You can read more about that here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
The only thing I can tell you is normally Sony and/or Fuji (look for the made in Japan on the pack) will be a very good bet. Verbatim is a definite good bet. You can order Taiyo-Yuden online too. They're the Cadillacs of the media. If it's worth it to you, then get the good media.
The Maxells can be good ones and may work well for you. It's a chance you might have to take. Maybe someone out here can give you a more definitive answer.

dipset121,
As rcm999 and BIGTOXY69 stated look for "Made in Japan" on the label. I buy exclusively +R media (for booktyping) and 8X. Maxell's will code out as "Maxell 002", Sony (8X +R with octagon spacer on top) and Fuji (8X) will code out as Yuden000T02. These are all top media but very scarce, you will have to hunt instore for them. I haven't seen any 16X +R's Made in Japan in my local stores, but that doesn't mean there isn't any.
The only media I would advise using "Made in Taiwan" is Verbatim. The others are a guessing game as to what you are going to get and not worth the trouble.

Hitachi Maxell "Made In Japan" are top notch media, it is ranked as 1st class media with the famous Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. I've been using them hundreds and hundreds (600 or more) and I've never experienced any playback issue. You can't go wrong with them.
Smart burning:
* DVD+R booktyped into DVD-ROM and you're free of worries.

All the spindles at my local staples say made in taiwan. I picked up their last +8x MIT and coded as Ritek-R03 so I'm pretty happy. Here's the MID code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RITEK-R03-002]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Media Type ID : [R03]
Product Revision : [002]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
I have no complaints with Ritek-R03 and fairs very comparably with taiyo yuden, verbatim, and hitachi.
I got curious on their +16x MIT and picked up a spindle, here's the MID code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:CMC MAG-M01-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG]
Media Type ID : [M01]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
Huge difference between the quality of ritek and cmagnetics corp. That's why I try to stick with the Made in Japan maxells for the sweet Hitachi made maxells. This is my first encounter of cmags in any of my maxell plus format batches in the last 2 yrs.
All my benqs have no trouble with cmags, but stand alone players are more susceptible to the lower quality media. I'll keep my burn speed at 4x, my backup target set to 4300 mbs,and nothing important will go on them.
dipset121: +8x made in taiwan maxells have always coded as Ritek-R03 so if you can find them at staples, grab them up unless the got the MIJ spindles.
Dash 8x maxells: Majority will code as Ritek-G05 in the MIT spindles and lots of peeps complaining about them. Cmags are also thrown in there,so be cautious.
