Just curious, i used to be quite knowledgeable in this area, but after nearly two years of fading to the background of Afterdawn and basically relying on DVD Shrink to get me through my problems, i think its probably time for a refresher course.

Been having loads of issue with DVD's recently. Many of the red labelled Sony Tristar type disks refuse to copy in DVD Shrink. Old DVD Fab Decrypter sometimes sorts this, but generally the files it throws out arent complient for DVD Shrink to use to compress.

No issue with the computer, its a very fast dual core job with 4GB of RAM and plenty other features. Media tends to be Traxdata Printable 8x. Pioneer 111 writer.

Whats is currently the best method of copying DVD's? Has anyone ever improved on the last official version of DVD Shrink before author was poached away? Are people commonly using programs such as FixVTS (or whatever its called) and combinations of other programs to sort a DVD.

Take a very awkward DVD with all the copy protection and dummy pits etc. What are you using these days to combat that and to copy/compress to a high quality?

Cheers

P.S. Hello to all those old members from my time here years ago ;-)

Chris

and my five pence -

i personally swear by DVDFab Decrypter (free, now up to 3.0.4.0) - http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm and then DVD Shrink then i burn with Nero.

Also some of the guys have some guides -

Arniebear's 'RipIt4Me..Quick Reference Guide' - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

alkohol's 'Rip any DVDs with RipIt4Me + DVD Shrink + ImgBurn full guide for newbies' - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740

The method I currently use to rip my DVD's is (In order) DVDFab Decrypter, FixVTS, DVD-RB Professional (Using HCenc) and ImgBurn (To burn my final product). I still have DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, AnyDVD and RipIt4Me around just in case I come across an oddball or older DVD's.

AnyDVD with CloneDVD2 or Nero Recode2 is the bomb!!! RipIt4Me does an exceptional job as well. The ultimate: AnyDVD with DVDDecrypter or RipIt4Me then DVDRebuilder with CCE!!!

Good to see you Chris! I've mostly been using DVDFab Decrypter, although I've played with FixVTS a little. I've even thought about buying AnyDVD.

As far as the actual compression end of things goes, I highly recommend DVD-RB. It uses an encoder back-end (your choice of several free or commercial programs) and it's reasonably fast with the right encoder and computer.

every once in a while this topic thread comes out.....what do you use? what's the best? Well...... I must have answered this same question so many times that this actually helped me with my thread count to become an AfterDawn Addict! hahahahahah ok ok.... all joking aside my programs have evolved into this:
AnyDVD + Clone DVD for all movies that have 80% quality compression or higher.... all others go directly to RipIt4Me (which I used Arniebear's and Alkohol's guides) but I don't use Shrink or Nero.. I'll use DVDRebuilder Pro w/CCE/ProCoder2 for best quality around then burn with ImageBurn directly to disk with the settings in DVD-RB! Now if I have an episode DVD then I will use RipIt4Me but, again, no Shrink or Nero, and then use DVDRemake to adjust the menu and take outs and then back to DVD-RB! I go the fast route until it counts when the rips don't produce 80% quality compression or higher! So far this has never failed me and there isn't any DVD out there that can't be burned to a DVD5 once it's on my hard drive! I owe this all to AfterDawn! which I'm a proud member!

other programs I use (honorable mention): all the VSO software (CopyToDVD, ConvertXToDVD, PhotoDVD, ImageResizer, VSOInspector, Blindwrite!), DVDFab Plat, Nero, Shrink, DVDInfo Pro add these to my major program list!

Just noticed you are using Traxdata discs. Those are usually Ritek, so that may cause problems.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

We're all entitled to our own judgment and preferences, so use whatever you deemed it's the best for you. Me, I like it simple & free (at least for ripping tools), except my encoding engine.

My primary method

* DVDFAB Decrypter
* VobBlanker to get rid of unwanted junks (FBI Warnings, Previews/Trailers/Advertise, Extras, etc.)
* DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70
* ImgBurn or Nero to burn

My 2nd method

* RipIt4Me (DVD Decrypter + FixVTS)
* Nero Recode
* Nero or ImgBurn to burn

My FREE method

* Either RipIt4Me or DVDFAB Decrypter
* VobBlanker to get rid of unwanted junks
* DVD Shrink
* ImgBurn to burn

Best of luck!!

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. Hello to all the old members lol - nbice to see you are still about (Vurbal how are you mate)

Cheers for the info. Various different methods you are all suggesting, and i've probably used most of them. WHat i havent tried is DVD Fab Premium version yet. I might give it a shot and see what the quality is like, unless some of you think its a waste of time. Im very keen for high quality, but not so keen on spending ages copying. GOt the home cinema room up and runningn with the HD projector and screen, so quality is a must.

One other thing:

Not sure I follow what the issue was with Traxdata and the authentic Ritek brands? Back in my day that was the dogs b*llocks of Discs, well bar the Tayo Yuden ones (im thinking about starting to use the 16x printable TY discs...)

Cheers

I've heard that Ritek was good back in the day, but they aren't what they used to be now. I've had compatibility problems with modern riteks, though, thankfully, very few failures. Still, I prefer TY or Verbatim.

I use CloneDVD2 with AnyDVD running in the background. I have yet to have any problem with any DVD's. I just did "Superman Returns" "Ant Bully" "Clerks 2". It's a one step process. CloneDVD2 first reads the writes the disk plus it compresses it as necessary. You can select what elements you want to copy or eliminate.

Oriphus,
I know that you have already received many responses on this subject but I'm gonna add my 'two cents' anyway. lol.

I use RipIt4Me (thanks goes out to arniebear for the tut) to rip in for simplicities sake and use the One Click mode so it's all automatic. It does give a nice clean rip.

Then I use DVDShrink or Nero Recode2 if the compression is between 80-100% and write with IMGBURN on quality media (TY, Verbs, Ritek). This method only takes about 25-45 minutes on my machine, which isn't a dual core. That is start to finish ripping, transcoding, and writing.

Now if the ratio is between 50-75% after ripping with RipIt4Me. I use DVD-RB Pro (with HCEnc) by browsing for the file that RipIt4Me added to the HDD. Again I write with IMGBURN on quality media (TY, Verbs, Ritek). Now this method takes an extra 2-3 hours due to the time consumption of DVD-RB Pro.

I know that you have already had similar posts but maybe this narrows down your choices to almost free stuff with the exception of DVD-RB Pro. Good luck to whatever you choose to use. lol.
