Hello All! I just registered to this site. I'm an avid burner because I make short films. I thought I wasn't too much of an newbie, until I ran into this problem. . .

When I attempt to burn my DVDs now I get an error message stating:

I/O ERROR!

Device: [2:0:0] HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B 1823 (E:) (ATA)

ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition

Interpretation: Unknown (Write Error)(0x0C, 0x80)

--------------------------------------------------

I use Verbatim DVD+R 16x and I attempted to burn at supported speeds [16x, 8x]. I've used DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and Nero BURNING ROM. If anyone could help me, even if it's to direct me to another section of the site, it would be much appreciated. But I've tried searching for this on past forums and couldn't find anything.

Hi Clown23
You might just need a firmware update - if there is one. Whose the maker of the pc?
They would be the ones supporting this drive. Unless you wanted to try some patched firmware (would void any warranty though).

Check and make sure all drive are in DMA mode - here's a guide if needed.

Anything change since you were last able to burn?

Another thing you can post would be the failed Nero Burning Rom log - has more info that may help. Just be sure to edit out your serial # - they begin w/ 1A,1C or 5C.
You can find them here:
Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

Are you burning from the same batch you've used in the past?

This version of Nero is known to be "buggy", uninstall, run this clean tool, http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html and then install latest Nero, 7.5.9.0 from here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/

Your burner is NOT recognizing your discs, so as binkie7 has stated you may need a firmware update, unfortunately I cannot locate it for your drive.

Thank you all thus far. I wasn't trying to take this topic into a Nero discussion, though. ALL my burning software [nero, DVD Decrypter, and IMG Burner] are giving me errors stating that the write error is due to an I/O error. I updated my firmware to the latest I could, and yet burning is still not possible. I don't understand it. . .

--------------------------

Ok, so I made a backup data disk [CD-R] for the firmware I D/L. That worked fine. I can burn CDs but not DVDs? I have a burner for both. I have a spare DVD burner, should I try that?

If in fact these discs are from the same batch a FW update will not help.

Are you saying that the GWA-4166B will still burn CDs but not DVDs? If so it's probably shot. The DVD laser usually gives out first leaving you with a CD only burner.

Yes thats the optical drive I've been using. BUT SAY IT ISN'T SO!

Ok, if my daggum drive is brokedown, then I'll try my other burner. Thanks again.

oh, BTW, not that this is on topic, but where do I find how to put an image on my sig?

Did you do as I advised and revert to version 6.6.0.18, run clean tool etc.

I think Mystic E hit the nail on the head. I have been using this burner a lot. Like a commented before, I have a backup burner on reserve. I think later tonite I'll be trying that out. It's just frustrating when I got double digit video files clogging my memory. It's hurting my PC's performance.

At any rate, thanks again for all of your help. It's allowed me to look at other aspects of this issue that I may not have before. Now if this was a WAN issue...I would have made Cisco proud . . .:(
