I posted a message many months ago stating that I was having problems with my NEC 3500AG DVD drive burner that came with my Gateway computer. Specifically, it would not burn 16x media at anything higher than 2x. It also would not even touch some DVD-DL media that I have. The firmware is Ver 2.98.
After many useless emails with Gateway, who tried to tell me at one point that the drive uses a windows driver and that there is no firmware(!)... I was pointed (by Gateway) to the NEC webpage. Of course, NEC says not to use the stock firmware (Ver 2.1A at this date) for OEM drives from Dell, Gateway, etc... I tried it anyway, fully knowing I may have to replace my drive. The NEC flasher couldn't even see the drive.
Finally, I went to the Dangerous Brothers website and downloaded their Windows Flasher package for the stock 2.1A firmware. It found the drive and flashed it. After rebooting my computer, it easily burned a 16X DVD. I tried the DVD-DL, and it burned as well. I used the bitsetting to make it a DVD-ROM. The DVD plays a little in the burner but I think the media may be the issue. It is cheapo Dynex media from Best Buy. In any case, if you are frustrated with Gateway's lack of support by giving you a drive with ver 2.98 (which looks like it would be advanced but it isn't) and then not supporting it, this posting confirms that if you follow the directions for flashing (disabling other drives and turning off software) but use Dangerous Brothers, you can still get great results.
Thanks Dangerous Brothers for supporting my Gateway computer. You should charge a fee to Gateway for the "outsourcing".
