I have read the current posts/threads on this topic, (also over at cdfreaks.com) but I am still having difficulty. I am trying to back up to DVD+R DL (so no compression or removal of features). [I know people have had success backing up just the movie, but I would prefer to get the whole thing if possible].

I am using the latest (Nov. 30, 2006) version (6.0.8.8) of AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter (v3.5.4.0), ImgBurn, (v2.1.0.0) and CloneDVD2 (v2.9.0.1).

Using WinXP Professional w SP2 and all updates.
My burner is a Lite-ON SHM-165H6S (firmware HS0E)
Burning w/ Verbatim DVD+R DL

Now...I know this movie is ARccOS protected, but when I look at "status" under AnyDVD it does not say that it is. Nor does it tell me that there is any structural protection, but when I have AnyDVD running and open DVD Decrypter, I get:

Anyways...I ripped with AnyDVD and burned with CloneDVD2, and no luck...burning completes, but finished disc is unreadable in compy or standalone DVD Player.

Why I am weirded out by this is that I had absolutely no problem backing up Madagascar, which is also ARccOS protected. However, AnyDVD is able to identify the crap on this disc unlike on Exorcism of Emily Rose. Here is what I see w/ Madagascar:

Here is what I get when viewing Exorcism of Emily Rose:

I have not tried ripping with DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD running in the background, because I suspect that this too will fail, and I would rather not make a shiny new double layer coaster. Any detailed help/suggestions would be appreciated.

I have not tried using the PSL2 plugin v2.21 for Decrypter...If anyone knows for sure that this works, please let me know...

That's odd that AnyDVD is showing the disk as unprotected except for CSS if it has ARccOS. I'm assuming the Liteon burner is set to booktype +R DL media as DVD-ROM.

Use DVD Identifier on your failed burn and see if it designates the booktype as DVD-ROM. If not, you'll need to fix that.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

I'd just use DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD running in the background. This should provide an exact duplicate of the disk with the same layer break. It's never failed me.

I'm sure you know this but in DVD Decrypter:
In ISO Read mode with AnyDVD running, rip to your HDD.
In ISO Write mode, select the mds file and burn the +R DL at 2.4X

I'm not sure what happens when you use the AnyDVD ripper along with CloneDVD. The PSL file will work with Decrypter for sure. You could try Ripit4me which will automatically get and use the PSL file for you. I'm pretty sure you'll lose the original layer break info so you'll have to rely on DVD D or ImgBurn to refigure the break location.

SWEET CRAP!!! I have spent all afternoon reading forums/guides, you name it. I was not a noob when I started this whole mess, but I now consider myself pretty well schooled in the nitty-gritty of the DVD file structure, and how ARccOS bastardizes it.

So...I finally got it to work, but first, let me describe my failed attempts in case others out there encounter the same problem:

Failed Attempt 1) I tried ripping the files with AnyDVD v6.0.8.8, and burning with CloneDVD2 v2.9.0.1. (Reasoning: I figured, since I have been able to back up other ARccOS protected movies such as Madagascar with this method, I thought even though AnyDVD was not showing the protection for some reason, (see above) maybe it was some bug in the newest version of AnyDVD, and I figured maybe it would still remove it.
The reason I burned w/ CloneDVD2 was that up until this very afternoon, I was not too familiar with the 'build mode' of ImgBurn (v2.1.0.0), and also because every time my AnyDVD (unprotect) / DVD Decrypter (rip) / ImgBurn (burn) combo crapped out in .ISO mode, I was able to make the backup by just ripping with AnyDVD and burning with CloneDVD2. That said, my preferred method for backups (since I use Verbatim DVD+R DL) is .ISO mode with AnyDVD running in the background and DVD Decrypter in .ISO read mode. This is so that the original layer break position is preserved. (I prefer not to shrink my movies to single layer.)

So this 1st attempt cost me a DL Verbatim, cause I assumed it would work on the 1st try. (also for blank double layer discs, ImgBurn does not have the 'test mode' that allows you to check and see if your burn will be successful before you actually burn.)

Failed Attempt 2) For this coaster, I decided to switch to Memorex DVD+R DL, which was a smart move, because coaster it would become. (still not cheap tho) =(

Here, I simply gave my .ISO read mode in DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD in the background the benefit of the doubt, and ripped the movie to a .ISO. I burned w/ ImgBurn (bitsetting on my Lite-ON to DVD-ROM). The burn got all the way to the end, flawlessly, then:

I 07:31:37 Writing Layer 0... (LBA: 0 - 1975087)
I 07:51:44 Writing Layer 1... (LBA: 1975088 - 3886322)
I 08:11:13 Synchronising Cache...
I 08:11:17 Closing Track...
I 08:11:18 Finalising Disc...
E 08:12:00 Finalise Disc Failed! - Reason: Session Fixation Error - Incomplete Track in Session

so that crapped out as well...shiny coaster #2... Third time's the charm right? Well it was for me (literally)...

My Success story:

so I delved the depths of the internet for info, and I won't bore you with the details, but I finally had a pretty nifty collection of software I was using by the end. Here is the list, with version numbers, the latest (and some of them the last ever made) as of Nov. 30, 2006 (Incidentally, my B-Day is tomorrow =)

01)LIGHTNING UK!'s DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 (Last version made)
02)LIGHTNING UK!'s ImgBurn v2.1.0.0 (Still updated)
03)SlySoft's AnyDVD v6.0.8.8
04)Slysoft/ElaborateBytes CloneDVD2 v2.9.0.1
05)DVD Shrink v3.2.0.15
06)FixVTS v1.602
07)RipIt4Me v1.5.7.0
08)PgcEdit v7.4
09)PSL2 plugin v2.21 (a plugin for PgcEdit)
10)VobBlanker v2.1.1.0

Of these wonderful tools, I ended up having to use only DVD Decrypter (of course), ImgBurn, RipIt4Me, and FixVTS) I did not use DVD Shrink, as I had no need to compress anything.

There is a wonderful guide on how to use RipIt4Me on their website,
http://www.ripit4me.org/guide.html

I personally used the wizard mode, and it worked flawlessly.

After all my files were processed with FixVTS, I went over to:

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1777
in order to learn how to make an .ISO with ImgBurn, from the necessary DVD files (previously cleaned-up with FixVTS of course.)

The following was also helpful:
http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=1780

After I made the .ISO, I just burned it w/ ImgBurn like normal, (except whilst making the .ISO, I assume a new layer break position was calculated for me instead of the absolute original one, but I will double check this.) Either way I was extremely relieved when I popped the DVD in and it worked. Fphewww!!! That was quite an experience. Hope it helps some folks out there.

Oh I thought this was quite humorous though unrelated:
Here are the possible layer break positions for the movie Envy with Ben Stiller:

Anyone know if there is any benefit of using one of the Excellents over the other(s) ? =)

Peace....
