Not sure if it's the media or my stand alone DVD player but suddenly my 16X Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs are having problems on playback.
I have a Philips DVP642 Stand Alone Player.
I have Win XP and use a Lite On SHM-165H6S Burner...I use DVD Shrink to backup a movie and then Nero 7.5.7 to burn it...On playback, it'll freeze at certain points...I thought perhaps I just got a bad DVD-R or perhaps I backed up a scratched DVD but the same process with the 8X Taiyo Yuden worked without the freezing.
the first thing(s) i'd do are try a simple copy/paste of all files off the dvd to your hard drive (using windows explorer). or use DVD Decrypter to rip disc to hard drive, that'd be better than my first suggestion as you'd see visual evidence of errors while it attempts to copy the dvd. another thing to try is a CRC scan as in my experience any dvd that gives (me) playback issues is borne out by CRC (corruption) on the disc..
The old compatibility bugaboo comes around to haunt even the best of discs! I suspect that the problem lies in compatibility with your drive and TY 16X discs because TY was late to market with 16X. I know that many early 16X drives have compatibility issues with 16X TY discs, particularly DVD+R. Firmware could fix the problem quickly, but drive manufacturers are more interested in getting new drives out to a nearly useless 20X speed (24X is coming after that!) rather than support their older drives in the market.
Try backing the speed down to 8X or even 4X--no slower--and see if default settings improve things for you. I am usually slow to blame the disc quality, and that typically gets me in trouble with some brands. In the case of TY, their specifications are fine for 16X. It's the lateness to market that is the problem.

How fast did you burn them?
Are both the 8x and 16x tys in the dash format?
How is the playback of one of those Ty-G03 backups when playing them on the pc and using that Litey burner to play it? You can take note of where the freezing occurs on the phillips and look at those areas when playing it on your pc.
I see several possibilities:
1)Are they ligitimate tys? Lots of fakes out there and you can't go by the Ty-G3 MID code.
Here's how you can find out if they are genuine Ty-G03's:
Look at the bottom of one of those 16x - tys,on the inner hub part of the purple dye. Get a bright light and look for a code like GH000073. The letters will be uppercase and 6 numbers following-which is the batch number.
The MID code can be faked, but not the batch number. Post back your batch number.
If they are ligitimate tys:
2)Even taiyo yuden can have bad batches leave the factory, try a few at the bottom of the spindle.
3) Some stand alone players can be picky with certain MID coded media. Keep burn speed at 8x max. Use caution if you were burning them very slow. This high quality 16x media was designed to be burned faster, so the old rule of thumb of slow burning can cause more issues with the faster quality media and latest quality drives out today.
Lite-on drives are capable of using K-probe to scan your backups for those little errors. It'll help determine how fast you should be your media by running a few scans on backups from different burn speeds. Burn according to the speed that shows you the fewest issues-per different MID coded media:
I thought 20x is pushing the realistic limits of the technology, let alone 24x.
Well, the good side is that, as long as there is money to be made by selling burners, blanks, etc. then the DVD standard is still healthy and supported.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
