I've been using exclusively DVD-R (except for DL burning) for over a year. My main reason is my DVD recorder, a Panasonic, only takes DVD-R, not +R. Also, Taiyo-Yuden -Rs are substantially cheaper than their +Rs.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

DVD -R. The way I heard it is that DVD -R were designed to be most compatible with stand-alone DVD players.

It's a set-top DVD recorder, the DMR-E50, and won't take any kind of +R. It won't even read non-booktyped +Rs. I think it was introduced in 2002-2003 though I got mine in 2005 and have the latest firmware. The thing's been a nightmare to own and the latest firmware, while it allows me to use modern media, really did a hatchet job on the video quality. However, I haven't gotten rid of it yet and like to keep things simple so I've stuck with -Rs for everything so far.

Another week, same repeated question. I'll take any (1st class media) DVD+R over any DVD-R, any day, any time.
Smart burning:
* booktyped DVD+R into DVD-ROM and you'll be free of worries
Yes, DVD-ROM is the best DVD format regardless where you're from. It will play in all functional DVD players. Notice how all original DVDs/movies and games are pressed as DVD-ROM?

Hi,
On the subject of DVD+/-R, I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this:
I was trying to copy a DVD-R onto a DVD+R using a new Samsung SH-S182M with Nero.
Nero wont let me burn to the DVD+R, and says I can only burn onto another DVD-R, even though the Samsung supports both media, (in addition to others as well).
So is true that if you copy video off one DVD media type, you can only lay it down onto that same DVD media type?
Thanks!

Well, I'm using Nero 6, which came bundled with the burner, and I went through the procedure to copy a disc several times.
Everything goes off without a hitch as far as I can tell, in terms of copying off the DVD-R source.
Then Nero prompts me to insert the destination disk, and specifies that
I need to use a DVD-R disk.
I then put in a DVD+R disc anyway, just to give it a shot, but sure
enough, Nero/Samsung rejects the disc. This is returned at the tail of the Nero log:
===================================
Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: Unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW.)
Compilation cannot be written on that medium type.
(Medium in drive: DVD+R. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW.)
===================================
I talked to Samsung support and they claimed that indeed, if my source is a DVD-R, then the destination medium must be DVD+R as well.
Go figure.

An update:
I have at this point very little love for Nero.
I attempted to bypass the problem of recording onto DVD+R disks
by tracking down some Lightscribe-able DVD-R discs, (a true saga since for some reason few b&m's seem to sell them).
Nero seems to have sucsessfully burned a copy of my original disk onto the DVD-R destination disk, but I havn't played it yet to test because a second problem has now come up:
The menu in Nero Express that's supposed to contain the button for starting the Lightscribe Print does not come up in my software. I have the latest firmware installed, but no soap.
Anyone seen that before?

I have the exact same samsung burner (When my old NEC burner started acting actin up, Creaky and the others informed me I should get a new drive. I just happened to buy the same one).
You have to get the lightscribe drivers from the lightscribe website to enable that function with the driver. They are free. Get it here.
I love this drive. Have not had one coaster yet. And I love lightscribe.
May I also suggest a program called SureThing DVD labeler. It is much better than Nero as far as the Lightscribe goes.

I would not mess with labels: They are one of the surest ways to ruin DVDs. If labeling is that important, invest in a cheap R220.

Plus format, booktyped to dvd-rom!!!! Not 100% stand alone player compatable, but pretty darn close.
Loolala: Are the dash backups that you are trying to re-rip onto plus format, burned with your samsung? or were they backups from another burner?
Do you have the MID codes for both the dash and plus-using Nero infotool?
Quote: I talked to Samsung support and they claimed that indeed, if my source is a DVD-R, then the destination medium must be DVD+R as well.
Go figure.
What a load of crap, LOL. I re-rip from dash and booktyped the plus and vice versa all the time-even on the fly using my basic Nero versions of 6.0.0.21b and 6.1.0.14.
Make sure you haven't downloaded the INCD packets from Nero. Sometimes a clean uninstall of Nero, running Nero cleantool 6,and reloading Nero will help take care of issues-here's where you can get Nero cleantool 6:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html
Quote: Insert empty disc to write to.

(Medium in drive: DVD+R. Medium required by compilation: DVD-R/RW.)
Sounds more like a firmware issue. Use Nero infotool and find the current firmware version.
Since you want to make a copy of an already properly sized and no encrypted dvd,try ripping with DVD Decrypter using ISO read to harddrive and ISO write. Takes about 5 mins to rip,and another 15 to burn at 4x. See if DVD Decrypter gives you that same error message.

I agree 100%
If you cannot get lightscribe working, just use a sharpie.
As far as firmware goes, I would run the Live Firmware update that comes with your burner. It will update the firmware for you with no hassles.

The trick is to use SureThing to print to a CD/DVD printer, and not as intended, to print adhesive labels.

I use sure thing only for Lightscribe. I find it does a faster/darker/better job than Nero.
Just a preference.

There might be a hacked firmware available. Check out rpc1.org. I still mainly use -Rs myself, but it's nice to have booktyping capability.
