My friend's xbox is not working. It goes directly to the screen where it complains about needing servicing. Error 16. From the looks and sounds of things, his hard drive is dead. Because, it keeps on making clicking noises and does not get detected in a real PC either.

Is there any way to get the HDD key so he can rebuild another hard drive? Someone softmodded it for him a long time ago and he doesn't have the eeprom.bin.

Only a mod-chip can save your xbox now. If you are short of money, go buy the duox2. The best selling mod-chip is Xecuter 2.6 CE and I like it. It comes at a reasonable price.

hmmmm........ clicking noises eh?? never heard of it. Although if you put a mod-chip, you can discard your current xbox HDD and put a bigger hard-drive, if you want to.

Iguess I need the cheapest method to just get the hdd key with modchip. Then plan on just softmodding it.

Ok, hold then there guys!

1) The easiest way to retrieve the HDD key is with an eeprom reader! You can build one if you're electronically minded or you can buy one off eBay!

2) Modchips are NOT always the answer, I repair almost all of the consoles I get without a modchip!

Ok... Ok.... Chill !!!

The reason why I told him to buy a mod-chip is that if he screwes up his xbox HDD again, it would be easy repairing the xbox if it had a mod-chip rather than wasting time in repairing it without a mod-chip.......

I am one example. :)

Where's a good place to get modchips on line? I've only had to softmods before. I just want the cheapest chip to get the HDD key or beable to get the eeprom.bin. Nothing special.

If you get a chip, you don't need to softmod, or get the eeprom! That's the whole point of the chip!

Softmods are easy and as long as you have the eeprom, you can almost always recover! If you don't have the eeprom, get an eeprom reader, read yours straight off the motherboard and you're home and hosed!

I was thinking about getting a solderless modchip to install. get the HDD key/eeprom.bin then rebuild the HD. After that uninstall the chip and use a softmod. I wanna keep the modchip for future eeprom recovery when other people screwup. But i will look into the eeprom reader if it's a cheaper option.

No need for softmodding your xbox when you have a mod-chip. When the mod-chip is fitted, you can play any types of games and if you screw up your HDD, it can be easily recovered if you have a mod-chip.

Error 16?? Does nobody read anything these days?

The clicking drive sounds a little on the terminal side but there is a simple test to restore the dash files that are damaged or missing (that's what error 16 means guys!!)

Bash halo 2 in the drive and cold boot the xbox..go to xbox live (no internet connection needed)..select the live account settings, and with luck the box will go into an updating routine...when it finishes take the game out and reboot...voila!!

If that doesn't work then either a chip or eeprom reader.. A friend (unicron) wrote the guide to build the $5 one that is posted here on afterdawn.. He got fed up of people questioning it all the time, but with care and reading the instructions it works a treat..Or you can use an elvis programmer if you can be bothered wasting days and days working out how to read an eeprom with a smartcard reader....

(Final answer.. There must be 100,000 error 16 threads here with exactly the same information)

The HD is toast. It makes the same 'clicking' sounds that I've heard on my PC hd's before they die. I'm gonna make the eeprom reader since I do have parts to make it. Hopefully I can get the eeprom.bin to make another HD.

However it wont' boot original games either. I put in a few games and it doesn't do anything but go to the service screen.
