I bought some DVDs in Germany and I want to watch them (in the US) not only on my pc but also on tv using a stand-alone DVD player.
I realize I have to convert from PAL to NTSC and burn etc.
Please some advice or hints.
Sorry if I'm at the wrong place here or if this has been covered before.
Thanks to all!

You can try ripping and burning the discs to NTSC or buying a region free stand alone dvd player

The first question concern I would ask: do these PAL dvd's have 5.1 surround sound( and is it a must to keep this surround sound intact)

If so, a method called DGpulldown can be used very well.
Hint: Google DGpulldown
Here is a Guide for using TMPGEnc 2.5 along with the DGPulldown method: Note, I don't really like this guide...he wastes too much time explaining unrelated side track info on the Tmpegenc extra features.

If the audio surround sound is not a must:

a complete conversion can be easy made...involving an MPEG encoder : changing framerate to 23.976(with 2:3 pulldown)/frame size to 720x480 and then time stretching/pitch correcting the audio to match. And it's not that complicated..provided you have a couple good tools:

CCE SP Encoder
Adobe Auditon
A mux/demux application( I use TmpegEnc 2.5 for this)

Here is a wonderful step by step( but more complicated guide for converting a NTSC DVD to PAL<---Note: the process works the otherway just Reverse it! Note: this guide uses BeSweet which I've stopped using now that I use Adobe Auditon for my audio conversions...BeSweet final audio volume is noticably lower than original & no pitch correction( so if Music is involved you can notice a change)

Have you tried BeSweet's OTA? The mode I use is HybridGain for my conversions and it works great for low audio files. Also BeSweet also has Sound Touch options for changing frame rate or pitch, tempo, rate.

I'll try it, I've noticed there are several versions of BeSweet out there...maybe I got ahold of an Earlier ver with bugs...Adobe Auditon is great...but the program takes up large HD space...If I had that BeSweet and it produces quality + easy user interface(GUI) then I'd be happy.

Hey,

VSO ConvertXtoDVD can easily do the conversion for you.

Load in the needed .IFO file (For the main movie)

VTS_01_0.IFO / VTS_02_0.IFO / VTS_03_0.IFO etc...

It will load the Titleset (All needed .VOB files etc...)

Set your needed settings, menus etc...

Hit convert, voila !

My 2 cents...

Try BeLight; it's a great GUI for BeSweet.

I'll have to try it again. The one conversion I did came out poorly. The same DVD run through NVE3 was much better.

from everything i have read the best thing to do is just buy the player that plays PAL and NTSC formats, most of the converters take to much time and most of the time the audio don't come out verry good, the players are about $50.00, and would be a great time saver and money well spent, if you are geting a lot of PAL dvd's. good luck
