Just picked up a dirt-cheap pack of 50 8x DVD-Rs at The Superstore (also available at Loblaw's) expecting them to suck. It was $9.99 for the spindle, much cheaper than all the other 50 packs. I brought them home and popped them in my drive, and to my surprise they check out as TYG02. There's not even a brand name on the spindle, just a lable that says DATA & VIDE0 1-8x DVD-R. They also had +rs.

Future Shop were recently selling 'Dataware' which ID as TY, but they are junk.

Is there anything on your disks to indicate they are the real McCoy, like a batch ID on the hub ring?

I don't think there is anything that can tell you if they are "the real McCoy". but after reading a lot on the forums, I do know that MIJ Sony's with the octagonal spacer at the top are TY's.

I have unbranded TY disks which ID as TYG01 and they carry the hub letters and numbers in the quoted thread.(they were purchased from blankmedia.ca)
The fakes dont have the hub number ID.
Generally the 'TY' branding on the fakes is so that the disk will be recognized by the burner firmware. It isn't neccessarily an attempt to pass off bad disks as good and if 'daveskis' disks have a verifiable TY hub id then I aim to buy some.

The only real way to know for sure is to check the media code on the media side of the disc. It is hard to see, but near the hub of the disc in the media itself is a set of numbers and letters. Doc aka kivory666 knows these codes and can tell you if you have fakes just by the numbers and letters listed in the media. Here is an example from Real Tys GD000272.

I would like to add that there is a brand name, I just didn't see it before... it's made by a company called "C2 Tech". Still burning with them, haven't made any coasters yet.

I just went to the Real Canadian Superstore as well, and picked up Fujifilm 8x DVD-R and they check out as TYG02 as well.
