I was wondering which form is best to store DVD-Rs? I'm currently considering two options:

1. Jewel case

2. DJ case

The advantage of the DJ case is that it doesn't take up so much space and the DVD's won't get bent or cracked at the center from pushing them into a Jewel case. But since I've never used this kind of system, I'm hesitating. Other suggestions besides those mentioned above are also welcome.

I have nearly 1,000 DVDs, so, the DJ style case is the more viable option for me...

kyo280 - At the risk of sounding like a cop out it depends on what you prefer - If you want to include the original artwork /DVD covers & inerts ect. Then the original DVD style cases like your first picture are a good idea - Their only downside is if you have Beaucoup movies /dvd's they will rapidly overtake your space ! - You can delay that option somewhat by using the slimline dvd cases to fit more cases and less space ! Binders are another option as long as they are not too big and are well made ! though most offer somewhat less protection than standard dvd cases 0r The DJ cases you mentioned ! The DVD type case you mentioned is a good idea though somewhat more expensive ! Offers protection and takes up less space then cases in a dvd rack - I would however if going to use that system Dj Type csses/hard case opt for the type with poly sleeves for the Disc as opposed to the one you pictured showing slim Jewel cases ( Clear Plastic kind) while these arte okay for storing CD's They are fragile and break & crack easily - Also keep in mind DVD's are somewhat thinner in the spindle/center hole area than cd's and the stress of normal CD type jewel boxes Can cause cracking in this area of dvd's ! Which you would'nt want to happen ! & Yes I am aware that some blank dvd media is sold in such jewel cases ( The CD TYPE) but that does'nt make it right or a good idea ! Other than that like I said it depends on your likes & wants kyo28 ! Good luck & happy Burning Ho ! HO! HO!- website you might want to check -Media outfit.com- Binders , Dj cases ect !

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Since space is starting to become a serious issue, I'm leaning towards options that take up less space so the DJ case an advantage.
However, I'm not familiar with the DJ case with that BIGTOXY69 mentioned. Could you direct me to some sites with info on those kinds of DJ cases perhaps?

Media outfit.com- They have or had these Dj type cases - also perhaps try Meritline.com or maybe supermediastore.com both of them have them as well ! Alao for whatever it's worth I believe I've even seen them in the small ( 200Disc) size at Wallyworld though I forget the price they were asking ! Good luck & happy shopping !

Thanks all for your replies and input. I'm looking to store away approximately 600 discs which could over time grow to nearly 1.000. Since space has become limited since moving to my appartment, I really needed to find a way to store them in a safe yet compact storage device.
One more question: are DJ Cases safe to transport DVD's? I mean, they won't get all jumbled up inside the case while moving?

The DJ cases are safe for transport. They keep the discs in place as long as you keep ALL the sleeves (empty or otherwise) in the case. NOTE: I have found that the 1,000 disc cases are a VERY tight fit when all the sleeves are full. I keep 900 discs in my 1,000 disc case. That leaves me 1/4 - 1/2 of an inch or so play to browse discs AND it gives me replacement sleeves....
When all 1,000 are in there, there is NO space to slide a sleeve back or forth. While this is ideal for transport, it is HELL selecting and replacing a disc. I must say that when transporting with 900, they still stay in place. Of course, it's not like I've ever checked them as airport baggage or anything, though!
May I also recommend Ant Movie Catalog for cataloguing your collection.

EDIT: I have gotten my cases from meritline.com and supermediastore.com. They both carry the same brand of case. As far as durability: my two-year-old daughter is constantly sitting/standing/banging on my cases with no adversre effects as of yet (good thing they are lockable).

teflonmyk- Now that's what I call durability ! ( ChildrenProof ) LOL! About as Good of a recommendation as one could give I suppose ! & short of Road Type cases like musicians use like (Anvil ) cases I would think that the hard case soultion would be best . Given the spacelimitations of our friend Kyo28 or anyone else in similar quandries ! I would think we'll all be in that place ( running out of room ) eventually given enough time & collection growth ! I still have a wooden rack to put together yet & fear that I'll Have it full before I even get it buiLt !!! teflonmyk ever thought of endorsing the Product ( DJ/harcases ) what's that sales pitch "kid tested Kid Tough " ? Just kidding - Good luck & thanks for the info ! Merry christmas to you & family !!!!!!

Thanks all for your replies. It's great to hear first-hand feedback from the DJ cases and I think I'll go for one of those and limit myself to approximately 900 in a case of 1.000.

As for cataloguing, I tried Ant Movie Catalog but switched to Movie collector (collectorz.com), as it offers better Japanese support (90% of my discs are Japanese) and it contains fields where I can input the storage device (e.g. DJ case n°1) and the exact location of the disc (e.g. sleeve n° 754).
