Hi I'm in the process of purchasing a new surround system. My requirements are a receiver with 2 HDMI inputs and at least 1 output. I will be using my HD direct TV box and my PS3 as the only things going into the receiver. Both via HDMI cables. I am not concerned with any upconversion or XM features. I was looking at this system that includes Klipsch quintet III 5 piece set. Model# Quintet III. The Klipsch 10" sub,model# sub-10. The reciever I picked out is the Sony 770w 7.1-ch reciver model# str-dg800. I can purchase this complete system for $1200 from Best buy. My question is this a good setup. I will mostly be using it for game play and movie watching. I'm a little concerned because Klipsch does not offer single speakers if I wanted to upgrade to the 7 speaker setup. That may not be needed after I listened to the 5 speaker set up. I would really appreciate any comments or sugestions. thank you very much.
Hello Stump24....welcome to afterdawn. I tried to find some professional reviews about your AVR but I just couldn't find any. I found a number consumer reviews though and I wasn't too impressed with some of the stuff I read. Here is a link to some....read them my friend. An opinion about how something sounds is just that...an opinion, but the "facts" on some things aren't impressive.
Notice the following:
1. The HDMI passthrough for this sony only carries video, not audio, so you have to connect the component anyway. Cost of cables aside, what's the point?
2. No on screen set up.
Ah well, there were a bunch of things. Read them through, perhaps start with the bottom reviews. Those that liked it seemed to be speaking more in defense of their purchase.
Given your budget, I'd look first at JVC, then at the lesser expensive Yamahas and Onkyos. In recent months, I've really had a change of heart about JVC products: they had a bad rep for awhile and I guess I could never get passed the boom boxes out of the Jetsons but a friend pointed out that their AVRs truly have the most features for the money and I've recently watched "Revenge of the Sith" (Star Wars)through a JVC AVR and it really did a hell of a job with the effects. I've run into some Yamahas and Onkyo's that had good deals for the bucks.
Anyway, read the comments about the sony and I think there'll be a few things that scare you away.
Klipsch makes awesome subs but I don't know how good their regular speakers are.
There is a company that makes some rather impressive speakers for budget speakers. I've only heard the following model though but I was floored at the sound these things put out for a mere 200. The company is called "Fluance" ... I know they have an ebay store as well. Like I said, I don't know much about them except that the system I heard was the best damned speakers I've heard for two hundred bucks for an entire set up. Check them out as well as their other models, you can also mix and match because they sell individually.
thank you very much for the advice. I would only be using the video anyways to the tv. The audio would go from the reciver to my surround speakers.I planned on having the volume all the way down on the tv. Would that work? If anyone else has any other suggestions please let me know thanks.
@Stump24....I sent a PM to a buddy here at AD who is a pretty knowledgable guy and a salesman at best buy to get his opinion on AVRs to look at next time you're there. I'll keep you posted.
stump24 , the Yamaha RX-V1700 has 2-HDMI inputs with the 1-HDMI output. i have this AVR and its very nice but its around 1000.00 bucks.
Klipsch are hands down my fav speaker by far i have the Klipsch KG-5.5 (2-10s and a horn) with the rear and center channel speakers and they sound amazing. plus i just bought the RW-12 Reference Subwoofer and this baby hits so hard it will hurt you lol.
so if you go with the quintet III GET a Subwoofer to go with it !!
