What you said is correct MIJ (made in japan). With Verbatim MIT (made in Tawain) being the only other one to buy. I go to Future Shop all the time tooo.

Not necessarily. UME disc or New Star, for example, are not as good quality as many of the discs made in Taiwan, and they are not as compatible either. It is a complicated issue that also depends on the drive you have as well as the firmware version of your drive. Fewer and fewer media are being made in Japan any longer. Maxell is moving all production of DVD+/-R to Ritek. TDK media are made by CMC as are Verbtim/MKK/MCC media. Even Taiyo Yuden was reportedly shopping in Taipei a couple of years ago to move its CD-R production to the Lin-Kuo Factory II. Optical media production was heavily subsidized by the Taiwanese government 10 years ago, and the factories in and around Taipei have the latest equipment. It has become more difficult for Japanese factories to compete, and that is why they have pinned their hopes on next generation blue laser media. Unfortunately, in-fighting among them will has caused delays in acceptance of either proposed format; and they have hurt themselves once again.

if you go for the sony's make sure its made in japan. other wise its nos as great. its really hard to find nowdays. if you are looking to buy media in the store like best buy or whatever it might be easier if you just get the Verbatim. Which is not too far of the the Taiyo Yuden. I am not sure that the japanese media you are refering in to.

these are not as good as Verbatim and the TY's

You can't go by the Made In Japan on the sony media. Example:

Sony D21 will be the MID code for sony +1x-16x that say Made in Japan. These will have the round-gray or white foam spacers on top.

Look for the White/Octagon spacers for the Sony Tys!!!!!

My local staples only has the round gray spacered spindles, but a few sales ago I picked up Ty-G03 with the white octagon spacered -1x-16x.

Even though the majority of sony media, they are still some pretty good media.

Japanese Maxells are very sweet as well!!! Look for Made in Japan on the outer shrink wrappers. These are manufactured by Hitachi of Japan. The taiwanese spindles will most likely code as ritek and few will code as cmags-so be cautious of taiwanese maxells.

Japanese Fuji are also out there, but getting very hard to find. Look for Made in Japan on their shrink wrappers.

Majority of my ty and hitachi media are found locally at:
Best Buy
Staple's
Office Max
Office Depot
Walgreens
Walmart
Kmart
Sam Goody's
Sam's club

Not a whole lot of it around, but I keep an eye on those spindles wherever I go.

To Quote Buckaroo Banzai " No matter where you go ,There you are !" LOL! I do the same thing If they have dvd media at any store I check the brands ( Sony , Fuji or maxell's preferably !) and I check the made in area of the label & or Look for The Octagon spacers on Sony's. Seems though when you find a Mother load of Japanese media - it's not on sale at that store or even another store so you can pricematch them ( Wallyworld ) for instance ! & when someone else puts them on sale the MIj's are'nt there or the store that had them isn't carrying that brand anymore or atleast for the duration of the sale ! And as much as I'm a hands on kinda shopper ! If I get Taiyo online cheaper I go there . But I still root through the Sony's , Maxell's ect... Like a rabid Anteater at a termite Convention !LOL!!! well as much as I can get too anyways . Though with the scarcity of Sony, Fuji , Maxell ect... I'm becoming more of a verbatim Buyer - I'll never completely get over My Taiyo Yuden Addiction But atleast I'll have My Vebatims for Methadone !!! And if Officedepot has another sale on their brand media( Officedepot) & not the Ativa CMC crap I'll be there too !Like the lil' green guy I shop @ the following As well as online - Best Buy mostly followed by

Office Depot
Walgreens
Walmart
Wherehouse
BestBuy
Sam's club
The stores I deleted from Saugmon's list Either are not in my area or not within 100miles of me -& Online It's the regulars like - Supermediastore.com , Meritline.com , Newegg.com , Buy.com ect... basically whomever has my media at the best price ! at the time ! all the places mentioned are good places to find media. Though you stand a better chance of finding MIJ at a Brick and mortar store ( Local retailer ) rather than online unless your buying Taiyo Yudens themselves! Otherwise I would suppose it's like flipping a coin with variable odds ( Unknown ?) Still the hunt is fun isn't it? well That's my .03cents worth (inflation LOL!!!!!) Happy Hunting & Happy Xmas everyone !

I'm in Ohio- Go Bucks! Whenever I get out of state like Kentucky or Tennessee,I always keep eye out for the good quality media sales for the MIJ spindles of Sony,Fuji, and Maxell.

I prefer local on sale media except for my shiny printable tys. Too many fights with UPS and Fed Ex is the reason. They drop the stuff off at their convenience, and it's usually when I'm working-so it goes back to their regional headquarters, UGGH!!!!

The higher cost of the plus format at these web stores is another reason-total bullsh*t!!!! Same price for either format at all these local stores.

Congrats goes out to Troy Smith- 2006 Heisman Award Winner!!!

Bestbuy Had 100's of spindles of 50 and 100 pk sony and all had those blue labels covering the top of the spindle. I looked at a dozen or so and all said Made in Taiwan. I walked out without spending a cent. Not so lucky with the toy sale at Kmart, LOL
