I can't find a more appropriate place to post this, so here goes:
I'm currently using LightScribe technology and am not very happy with it. I did a quick search and found the Uprint CDP78 Thermal Printer at Meritline. Any thoughts on this or other nice ways to label your DVDs? Note: I was using the Neato labels, but I (think) I read a post here that said not to do this...
Thanks!

Epson and Cannon ink jet printers do a nice job and you can buy compatible ink for them relatively cheap. Can't help you out on the Light scribe. There are many subjects on these in the media forum. And you're correct in my own experiences that labels will create problems on media. Chris
Edit Dang Creaky your fast just came down to give him a few links and you already moved it . Top of the afternoon to you sir!

I have found that the printers do the best job for me. I am using an Epson printer. I also hear that Canon has one out that does a good job.
The one I have requires 1 CD/DVD loaded at a time manually to print. Its not like you can feed a few and the printer picks up the CD to print. It still does a great job. The ink lasts a while too. I actually bought this printer last year (2005) for only $90 CDN. Beats the hell out of using labels. My home made DVD's look professionally created.

I was disappointed at first with the lightscribing. Blurry images, even after scribing them a second time. Then I found Lightscribe ELCU=
http://www.lightscribe.com/support/index.aspx?id=306
It's a free enhancement utility to help clear up your lightscribe covers.
USA- Epson R series, Europe- Canon pixma printers-not exactly sure of model #'s.
I also do full hub white inkjet printable and reg hub shiny inkjet printables with my epson r-200. Very sweet, basic photo and disc printer.Staple's,bestbuy, office max, office depot, and sam's club carry these epson R series printers. The 200 series is basic and the 300 series has more bells and whistles on them like view screens and card readers. Here's a few:
Epson Disc printers:
http://supermediastore.com/epson-auto-pr...t-printers.html
I use lightscribe, inkjet printable, and reg media. Depending on what covers I locate for my backups, decides which media it goes on. Lighter covers are more faded with white inkjet printable. The shiny's look better and the LS fair pretty good with my lighter covers. Darker covers-definitely white/full hubs.
Another nice feature of Epson R series printers-if in the USA, Very cheap ink. They take 6 different colors and a set runs $60 and above. I get generic ink that runs $35 for 2 sets, and that's twice as much as what it used to cost me. Very cheap ink,and very good photo quality.

I don't use lightscribe either, but have read that if you make the original(art & info going on label) black & white, the lightscribe looks better. Colors, when converted to lightscribe's single color, tend to lose sharpness, and wash out some. I don't like the monochrome look of lightscribe, personally.
I also use the Epson "R" series printer, and like it a lot. Hard to tell the difference between the label it prints, and the original.

Ink-jet printable paper labels--absolutely not unless you use only the innermost ring of variable size versions. (OK for CD-Rs)
Ink-jet printable polyester labels--much better than paper.
Ink-jet printable coatings--excellent
Thermal printable coatings--excellent but monochromatic and no shading.
LightScribe labels--monochromatic but do include good shading. Take a long time and use up the finite life of a laser diode doing printing more than recording.
Ink-jet printable seem to make the most sense in terms of cost, time, quality, and color.

The inkjet printables come out at the most 40 cents a piece for the Verbs for me. I buy them on sale at $15.00 for 50 and the ink carts at about a $1.15 each and the quality is always as good or better. If I include the dvd case and photo paper for the cover is another 30 cents [20 cents for the case and 10 cents for the paper] Plus the relaxation of playing with different variations. Heck when I put together this computer I took a picture of the mother board and put it on the disk with all the info of the build and costs. Needless to say I don't look at the info on the disk but drool over how cool it looks on the disk. Chris

The Epson R320 looks great -- Anything out there that might be comparable that's a little cheaper? Best I could find was about $120 + shipping... I know this isn't too bad, but I'm cheap!
Thanks,

My local staple's have the R-220 for $80 and the R-340 for $130. Same printing specs between both those models, just the R-340 has a card reader and color view screen.
Sam's club should also have them for around $80

I heard some disturbing news about Epson suing a bunch of sites that were selling off brand cartridges. I've always had good luck with cartridges from abacus.com, but when I just tried to install a fresh set, they're not recognized. They're in the same yellow boxes, but the labels on the cartridges are slightly different. This sucks! By the way, I've got an R200.

These are the same numbers I got a while back for my 220 & 340. I wonder if Epsons changed something Abacus has missed youwouldn't think after Abacus had to raise there prices to satisfy Epson My last few orders have come from Meritline and Supermedia strange thing though the colored ink was Ridisc and the Black was G&G. Maybe try installing your old black ink cart with your new colored and see what happens. Keep us posted. Chris

I'm on my last remaining drops of Abacus ink and just tapped into my first Yellow cartridge from G&G ink from supermediastore.
Those last 2 Abacus yellow cartridges didn't last very long. The one cart I just replaced the other day,I didn't even get a running low warning through print cd when I did several covers. I had to pull it out and shake it to find out it was empty.

saugmon- & friends !
Sounds like a Saturday morning Tv kiddy show LOL! Don't have an epson R- Series printer but Do have a Epson Cx-7800 all in one & have bought most of my replacement ink from ezinkjets.com The tip for dealing with them is wait for the 45% off sale with free shipping ! On the cartridges for the R series like you all have I don't know if they can beat meritline.coms price but atleast it's another source ! I'm almost out of Magenta ( I'm lucky , your lucky , we're all lucky...LOL!) In the printer I mean ! I've still got a supply ahead !! Good luck , Good printing & Happy Holidays Ciao!

I'd like to find another 36 ink carts for $36 special like one of those sites had last week. I've got myself,my dad,and 4 other co-workers that use the same ink as the R-200. My last extra set went to one of my coworkers-so he owes me a set, LOL. He said he went to Wallyworld for ink-pics of his new baby boy-and they wanted $80. He must have priced them individually because they should have been around $55-$60 a set-Holy Moly!!!
I got EXinkjet.com bookmarked. Now I got them,meritline.com,supermediastore.com,and rima.com to find the lowest price when I need more.
