I figure this is as good a place as any to go over a very lite set of very commonly asked questions in this portion of the board:
-The systems did not ship large quanitities of DOA units, I've not heard of, or experienced major malfunctions in the unit myself; and no huge stories have been circulating; it's safe to buy.
-The wrist-strap problem is highly inflated. If you're using it properly, taking breaks like your supposed to, not persistently letting go of the remote, you'll be fine. The wrist strap breakage does not occur from regular use. It comes from the controller pulling on that strap over and over again. Generally, when you're swinging it, etc. Of course that breaks it, but that's common sense. The PSP straps broke when they were swung around too.
-Video CAN be done with use of a conversion program. But right now, the Wii only supports a very specific format. There is no streaming support, and we are waiting for stronger video playback abilities, so that less effort is required to watch a clip on our systems. Although, it's not a high priority, seeing as the Wii is a GAME SYSTEM, not a video player.
-There have been some minor reports of systems 'glitching out' online, most of these reports involve users tinkering with their settings to sort of 'force' the system to do things not yet supported.
-There are ways to bypass some of the system's protections, and run homebrew, but it's nothing new, and uses Gamecube code; so it's probably not going to be to true Wii-level any time soon all too soon, give that element at least six months to reach a good support level.
-The system is not designed to compete graphically with the 360/ps3. If you have to have those graphics, get a 360/ps3. I did. The Wii is a cheaper system, with a bette, more involving way to control your game; not an all-in-one graphical hardware powerhouse.
-The reviews are in across the board, people are loving the controls, they feel very natural, and truly deliver on the level of ease that Nintendo promised.
-Virtual Console support functions very well; but titles are still limited. Many users are daydreaming about the titles they would like, but Nintendo is keeping fairly quiet about the topic. There are many threads filled with speculation on this, but they are just that; speculation. Nintendo has yet to release an official, definitive release chart, and we're all waiting.
-USB storage is still not working, and may not be a feature in the future. Nintendo never actually stated this would be a workable option, so it's anyone's guess. They may use those ports for entirely different feature; such as the wired network adapter expected in January; or even to power an additional sensor bar for future games, which may require some extra degree of control. It's USB, it's the most widely used perepheral adapter in the world. No one knows.
-We're all still waiting for Wii Connect 24 to allow online games; none have been released, as yet; Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam was originally slated to have Wii Connect 24 capabilities, but that feature was dropped; most likely to hurry release, so it wouldn't sit in warehouses, waiting to be released.
-Most Virtual Console Games will not work with the Wiimote(Just the NES and a few of the TG16 titles), the SNES, genesis, and N64 titles can be played with a classic controller, available for 19.99 by itself or for 39.99 with a point card that equivilates to $20 in points. All VC games can currently be played with the Gamecube remote as well.
-Gamecube support is flawless, as should be expected, since the processor architecture was simply carried over from the original gamecube and sped up.
-The sensor bar can be replaced and/or modified to allow more flexibility, for those few users who need to, a thread can be found about this on ADForums, and widely around the web. 7.5v of current is the general consencus of what is required.
-If you're still looking to get one before Christmas; you're not going to find any terribly new secret trick here. Just call the stores, like you have for years, and ask: A.)Do they have it? and B.)When will they get it? Pester one store daily, and you may have it within a week or so.
Additions:
------------------------------------------------------
Q: Do I need to be connected to the internet to play VC games that I have downloaded?
A: No. Ocnce you download them on YOUR system, you no longer need to be connected to play them. However, you cannot download them on another system and transfer them, this will not work.
------------------------------------------------------
This sums up almost every question that people are asking about the system, all in one thread. If anyone wants to reference to it, feel free. If any of these seem unclear, raise more questions, or you feel that I am wrong; don't hesitate to let me know, I can always revise.

Nice FAQ, but hey on the video section, I would like to know of which specific video format are you talking about ... ?? One of the features I'm looking on the Wii is to play videos so that I can just download some series and watch them full tv screen size...

Use Wii Video 9, and it will convert any format for you; but be advised, this program is not 100% stable. Expect to see snags frequently if you work with a lot of codecs. It's not any fault of the programmer's, it's simply the nature of the beast.

Yeah, that doesn't work at all. It doesn't matter what you format to; the system will not recognize it for anything.

I'm planning on getting a Wii, but there's something that hasn't been noted anywhere, not even here: using the Wii in a horizontal position. I have never seen any Wiis operate flat, I have always seen it working upright, which makes me think that the Wii was designed to only be used upright, which I'm not very comfortable doing(I own a PlayStation 2, which I never even tried to put upright, and I want to do the same with the Wii). The question: can you play the Wii flat?(I know this is a stupid question, but like I said before, always seeing it operate upright makes me think it wasn't designed to work flat)

the wii can be used flat or upright. Just looks cooler upright. No need to worry about it falling over as it has a stand then that stand has a clear cirular stand that locks into it. once you get one you'll see.

That is correct, among the confirmed titles is some sort of table hockey, and I *may* have heard something about skiiball, but I can't verify that. I wish there was more information I could give on the subject, but it's a relative unknown for the moment.

Okay thanks, Trigga, but the odds of me getting one are really getting thin. ALL, and I mean, ALL my local electronics stores(Best Buy, Future Shop(I'm Canadian), Wal-Mart) have no Wiis whatsoever in stock. I actually got screwed over because the Future Shop I normally shop at got 12 Wiis yesterday and I didn't go. I went today to check. Best Buy is saying they'll get some by the end of the week, Future Shop is saying not before Christmas, Wal-Mart has no clue, and they leave empty Wii boxes. I'm not liking this at all. I would like it that this thread keeps track of Wii shipments throughout the US and Canada(I specifically need a Canadian member here to point me towards a shop that carries at least 1 Wii), too.

what you do is go to best buy and snatch the display. LOL j/k
what you could do is check the returns at wal-mart and such. it sounds crazy but i called a wal-mart here and they did have one (still sealed) and right then it was being sold :(
so the next day i waited at gamestop.
Also the nintendo forums have people that track when shipments are goin to come to different retialers.

You know, I might not need that. My local MicroPlay(Canadian-only store), is due to recieve about 20 Wiis(not certain) in 3 to 4 days, and they're allowing people to reserve their Wiis(a first, at least to what I have seen, since most retailers are "first come, first serve", which I really hate). I did that today(#12 or 13 on the list), so as long as they get at least 12 or 13 Wiis(probably certain), I can rest. I have been chasing the Wii since the end of November(actually since launch, and I'm never going to camp overnight for a console).
