Hi Everyone. I realize that Maxell media is not the greatest choice. But most of the time I get my dvd-rs at walmart. The Maxell dvd-rs I used to get were Ritek media, but now it seems they are ProdiscF02 media. I've been having some burning problems with the discs lately and I'm wondering if it has to do with this media. I have heard Riteks are at least a little better media than the Prodisc (can anyone verify this for me?). My burner is a Benq 1650. Walmart has recently started carrying 50 packs of Maxells for only $20 (i used to get 25 packs for $14). I'm not sure if the media for the 25 packs are the same or not. I also thought maybe the cheaper media was the reason for the cheaper price?

So I have a few questions. First of all, can anyone tell me of a place online I could buy some good media at reasonable prices? And also, out of all the dvd-rs that walmart carries, which would you say is the best?

Number 1 rule is "Made In Japan". If it's not Made In Japan, then don't buy it, simple as that.

I've been using hundreds and hundreds (600 or more) Hitachi Maxell (Made In Japan), rated as 1st class media with the famous Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim and I've never encountered any playback issue whatsoever.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

Something to consider: You're not even getting a good deal. You're paying 40 cents a disc for that Maxell, which is dubious, when you could be getting Taiyo-Yuden for 30 cents each, shipped, from supermediastore.com. Verbatim's even less sometimes. Even if Wal-Mart's the only store around, as long as you can accept a UPS shipment, you can get better media for much less.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Maxell made discs (MIJ) are, along with MCC and TY, the cream of the crop.
Ritek are garbage. Do not buy Ritek G05's. They have the same problems that Princo had.

So in short, don't buy any Maxell discs that are not MIJ as Maxell need to know that people want quality discs, not Ritek.

Although I have heard that Ritek will be making MXL discs now, with Maxell MID, as Maxell has outsourced it. This is a simlar thing as MCC has done.

yep, no point in using stuff that 'might' work, when you can use media that just works, that's my motto

Use ritek at your own peril.

newegg sells ty for 23.99 for 50. you can find them cheaper i'm sure. but even at this price plus 5 dollars shipping. the cheap stuff at walmart is 23.99 for 50. i came to this site to learn. and learn i did. by purchasing stictly made in japan. i own zero copies that will no longer play, or even show any sign of degradation. my son laughed at me, right up until he saw how long his imation's lasted. now he too has learned. MADE IN JAPAN.... there is no substitute.

unless you like backing up movies over and over
