Would any of these identification programs for dvds work with a dvd-drive for computer if its only a player? I have a spare slot in an older computer that I could put a dvd-player in, the machine is prob not fast enough for a dvd-recorder though, just wondered if I could read those manufacturer IDs with that. (have a stand-alone DVD recorder right now) thks

Should work if the operating system supports the software. If you are wanting to do quality scanning you will need to make sure that your drive supports the feature.
CharlesAB- Or you could just install DVD Identifier on your main computer & if the Mid codes come up as a Craptastically Crappy Brand ( CMC or Worse ) you can avoid that brand entirely ! Or you could just stick with the Tried & true Taiyo & verbatim 's ( Ist String ) Then Maybe Riteks or Ricohjpns for a Second Choice . You can include the MIJ FUJI 'S ,SONY's , & Maxells in with the Taiyo's & VERbAtims too. Incase someone thinks I am slighting their favorite media - Be aware though there are or were some MIJ Sony's that are MIJ though not Taiyo Yudens They will have the Round white spacer on top of the spindle ! They Code out as sony's They are'nt bad disc I'm using some now and so far no problems just would'nt want anyone to be disappointed when they bought them ! Mine are 8X DVD-R Mij Sony's ! The Taiyo Made ones will Have a White Octagon shaped spacer on the spindle & also say Made in japan near the scan label/barcode/Upc Label !But installing DVD Identifier on one or more of your Computers could'nt hurt either ! Merry Xmas !CharlesAB
Thanks BigT>I don't have a DVD drive on my computer right now, and since its almost 3yrs old now I really wasn't going to put a burner on it.(Im thinking its about time to build myself a newer/faster puter first, then buy a burner&trash the standalone DVD recorder) That was why I wondered if the dvd-player driver would do the trick.
After shopping some today though, it seems there's not a lot of $$ difference in a burner, so I will prob just grab one after the Christmas shopping.
To address your choices! I love the verbs but my dvd recorder now will hardly format one any more, I fear I may have just about used it up. It has burned a few hundred since I bought it in Jan lol. Or else its just extremely dusty on the inside , sometimes after running the cleaning disk, and blowing the tray out with the canned-air, it WILL record on one. Usually though it just says "cannot record on this disk blah blah" But mostly now Im using those Snny disks, MIJ when i find them, MIT most of the time. Havent seen an 8X spindle in months though, around here, even the verbs are 16X.
Thanks for your reply and A Merry Christmas to you also.

I've got a 598 mhz celeron,256 mbs of Rimm,9 gb hd,30 gb hd,and a Benq 1640 in that pc and she'll burn up a storm. It really slows down with the more compression, but with no compression backups-she'll fly. The majority of this pc is way older than yours. It even plays dvds perfect using Windvd. She rips very quickly using DVD Decrypter.
Benq's can use Nero's disc quality feature,Dvdinfopro,Dvdidentifier, and qsuite.Getting harder to find these quality Q's. You can get you a decent Liteon/LG/Nec for well under $35 at newegg.com and do both playing and burning.
Well, my newer machine, which was intended for linux but now also has a Win2kpro partition, is an Athlon XP2000. Thats prob plenty fast for DVD burning but dont have a video card in it that will capture. Yet.
My really old windows pc is a 466 celeron with 256m ram and thats the max for it, It has a cd burner that I never could find an upgrade for when the 700MB cdrs became the norm, so its not very useful any more. (I can store files on 700mb cdrws but wont even format a 700mb cdr) That is the one I thought about putting the dvd player in. I can always move it to the newer box later, or a new computer altogether. thks
