Thats DVD brand media ( Taiyo Yuden ) Why ?

Hey Doc - Being you are resident Guru and Jedi Master of all things Taiyo Yuden ! Why do you think They ( Taiyo Yuden) don't sell Their Branded media ( Thats) I believe it's Called here stateside ? It would make a lot of our lives easier anyway ! No more Rummaging through stacks of sony's or Hoping against hope to find some old Fuji Mij's ! Do you think it's that they don't want to compete with their online media sales ? Or Perhaps they've promised sony not to compete outside Japan ? Directly I mean . I would think the market for them is there or here rather atleast amongst the afterdawn community! Perhaps though it we are not a big enough demographic to market too ? Or More likely There is not enough of a profit margin with the price of DVD media coming down ? well If anyone would know about all this it would be you ! so I thought I'd ask ? I know your Busy with your Work so Thanks Doc & Happy Holidays To You & yours !

BIGTOXY69 I think the answer to your question maybe more political and or family backed then the bottom line $. It seems in what is read that TY and Sony are very close indeed, possibly some family ties here in marriage ? Kind of like the Ford Motor Company and Firestone blood lines, 1 of the Fords is married to 1 of the Firestones and you get Firestone tires on every new Ford vehicle produced, amazing how that works. Back to Ty and Sony. The Japanese are very loyal people and there may be some family connection between the 2 companies. They (Japanese) are also very loyal in their purchases to market brands, whether it is cars or electronics and are not as price fixated as we are here in the United States. So there may be a small , but I doubt it, corncern about low pricing their product to the level of very poor quality manufacturers , since you can buy TY online as cheap as any other media almost any day of the week. So the answer may have to do with loyalty between the families...JMO.....

BIGTOXY69...This is just my opinion , and you know how opinions are like a--holes , everyone has one :).. But there is a lot of secrets in the Japanese culture, some that may never be understood by us Americans. My daughter studies Japanese so I get a little bit here and there from her. I would have to say that TY or Sony would never lay all their business cards on the table and try to explain it to us..again JMO ....Possibly Joe Ryan may have a better say on this than anyone else on this board....

dilligaf9- Okay ! Everybodies got Belly buttons too ! ( unless they're an ***hole LOL! ) OR one of the Marsupial People from Dimension X but as Paul Harvey Would say"that's the rest of the story!" It just seems like it would make sense ! But I suppose I'll just Scout for sony's (MIJ) ,Buy Taiyo Yudens online , & Buy Verbatims when they're on sale ! like everyone else ! alkohol- Thanks for the Info ! Thats ( No Pun intended ) Pretty Much what I found out from Wikipedia Too ! My how this thread grew ! Originally It was just a open question? /0bservation that if Taiyo yuden Sold ( THAT'S) brand media here it would make buying Branded media easier! No Scavenger hunting for MIJ Sony's & Fuji's , No looking for Octagon Shaped Foam Spacers ! Or reading infinitely small print ( Made in Japan ) !Just pick up a spindle or Three of That's and you'd be done ! But That's Not going to happen so it's do all of the above ! & or Buy Genuine Taiyo online ! Which really isn't a bother other than having to pay a higher price For DVD+R's . When you buy branded & or locally both DVD-R & DVD+R are the same price ! you already know that of course . Again thanks & Merry Christmas to all!

It's all good. Maybe Doc can tell us more info, he knows some people that's working with TY (US). Give him time, maybe Doc's too busy nowadays, so hope he'll see this thread and have a better explanation.

Taiyo Yuden uses "That's" as its house brand. That brand name was also used for its line of audio cassettes that never got much market share in the U.S. TY developed the method of CD-R recording with its cyanine organic dye, and that started consumer optical recording in the mid-1990s. TY still holds the patents to much of optical recording technology.
It is difficult for them to compete in the retail environment because of the nature of retail business. Brand recognition is important as is shelf movement--the faster the stocking units (known as "skus") fly off the shelves, the better. A large retailer can demand that the supplier pay up front for shelf space and for advertising in brochures and in newspapers. That's before he has sold anything! When the product is delivered, the retailer may have 90 days to pay for it or only pay when it is sold (under consignment agreements). However, if the delivery is late--even a few hours late in some cases, or there is pallet damage or mis-counted product amounts, the retailer does not pay until there is an investigation. Even if the the claim turns out to be false--and it almost always does--the retailer has added another week or two to his terms to pay. If product flies out the door due to rebates that the manufacturer pays for so the product almost ends up free for the consumer, the retailer gets his money and may have up to four months to pay the manufacturer. Oh..and the product has to be the cheapest on the shelf. The retailer tells every supplier that.
It is this kind of environment that has driven prices of electronic products and media down to the bone--and into the bone in many cases if one examines the quality of some of today's products compared to what was available a few years back. Taiyo Yuden cannot compete in this wacky environment, and they don't have to. They can supply duplicators, Internet suppliers, and OEM customers without the goofiness inherent in retailing. The only other option for them is to sell to very restricted channels as a premium brand, much as Denon did with average quality tape being sold in boutique A/V stores for more than BASF, Maxell, or TDK's superior products. TY has apparently decided not to do that, probably because the small volume is not worth the effort. Retailers have far more say in the products you see than most people realize.

JoeRyan- That's pretty much what I thought ! & besides they have their japanese market ! - Well I guess it's Online & Sony MIJ's when I can find some ! The Fuji's MIJ are nearly extinct here ! And there's always verbatims ! Thanx for the information JoeRyan & merry Xmas !
