Hopefully someone out there may be able to help.
I have been backing up Dvd's for quite a while with excellent success using Dvd Fab Express. I have been using DVD+R media which both my Dvd players support. With about the past 8-10 backups, all seems fine but about three quarter ways into the disc it starts to freeze and play again and freeze again and so on. When I play it in my computer its fine which would indicate that the backup was successful or am I missing something. Any help would be great.

There could be many problems.
What is the name brand of the discs?
What burning speeds is the media rated at?
What speed are you burning at?
What burning program are you using?
Is your laser lens clean?
Do you have a lot of programs running in the background? Perhaps they are loaded at startup.
Is your hard drive defragmented?
Is your firmware up to date?
Is your burner old?
Do you have plenty of free memory (both physical and virtual)?

I have had bad burns due to a badly fragmented drive. It makes your pc work harder because the files are scattered all over. After you finish degragging, try burning at 8X. ImgBurn is an excellent burning program. You might want to try it.

Ease her down to 8x and give it a shot.

Nero and Roxio can clash with one another. Usually roxio likes to take over. Usually it's the extra packets in them. Nero has INCD and Roxio has Drag to disc. Usually it's advised to leave out these packets. You may have to remove them both and run cleaning tools to completely rid all remnants of those 2 programs. Here they are,not sure if you're using nero6 or 7,so here's both.

That's for your stand alone player,if it's the only drive that shows those issues. You can try a hard lens cleaning disc that most stores sell.Insert the cleaning disc and it tells you what to do for the cleaning process. It's a last resort. Those cleaning discs have ruined drives before, including myself.

To free up memory, turn off screen saver, antivirus, firewall, and any other programs that may be running that you don't need during the dvd backup process.

Keep hd/s defragged regularly.

No paper/sticker labels. I've seen it way too many times with playback issues on people slapping stickers on their backups.

Firmware controls the writing strategy of your burner to your blank media. Updates are available on DVD-RW drives to help keep writing for the newer/faster media that comes out. Some brands of burners update regularly and others very rarely update.

Your pc plays it's own backups and they look ok?

It should and the quality should look near original. After that, the stand alone players come in.Stand alone players will have a harder time reading dvd backups. When you have a stand alone player that shows: Freezing/Pixellation/jumping/skipping/or a no disc error- it's telling you something is wrong with that backup. The pc confirms it's a good backup, but there's something about it that your player doesn't like. Here's the usual culprits:

Wrong format
Burning too fast/too slow
Poor quality media
Certain MID coded media
Backup target: Don't burn entire disc,Keep backup target under 4360 mbs.
Mult-tasking
Paper/sticker labels
Dirty laser lens-in the drive that shows those issues
Fragmented HD-if it shows up during playback on the pc DVD-RW drive
Heat issues- may have to add extra fans/blowers to keep tower cool.
Spyware/malware/too many registry errors.
Burn engines: Try a different burn engine.
Programs: If transfering AVI,mpeg, etc to an ISO.

This is just some of the things that a picky stand alone player can pick out in your backups. The paper labels, too fast burn, and dirty laser lens would be my guess. Verbatim top notch, but I still avoid 16x burning. Burning entire disc, uneven dye can give you issues towards the end of your backups during playback.

Thanks for such a detailed response saugmon, it seems to me I have a little to learn. I am going to remove roxio and Nero as you said. Is imgburn ok to burn with? or can you recomend one. I have been using sticky labels so thats stopped. The other thing I haven't come across is Back-up target, Keep target under 4360 mbs. What do you mean? Thanks for your help

Sticker labels: I can't tell you how many members that came here having playback issues and it was usually the sticker labels they were using. They need pefect placement, but still can be off balanced/build up heat/even disentegrate in your drive. If issues arrise, try peeling that sticker label off with something like GooGone.I even heard WD-40 works.

I use: Sharpie/inkjet printable media/and lightscribe. Less playback issues that what I'd have if I used sticker labels.

Backup target:
A standard blank DVD-5 single layer disc says it'll hold 4.7 gbs=4700 mbs. Through the conversion of the byte,You only have approx 4380 actual mbs. Look at your harddrive disc and you'll see how drastically a supposedly 200 gb harddisc actually holds around 189 gbs. We lose quite a bit of space because of that conversion.
Burning the outer edge of a dvd can give you problems. If any flaws in your media like bad batch, uneven dye-and you'll a coaster or playback flaws when the laser reaches the outer edge of the disc. I keep mine set at 4370 mbs with my quality media. Poor quality media, you may have to go down to 4300 mbs for the backup target.

This backup target size can easily be changed with DVD Shrink and Nero recode 2,not sure how it's done with other programs.

ImgBurn is a very good program. I use it for DL backup only, with the ripping done with dvd decrypter's ISO Read mode.Same when I run into low budget DVD-5 originals or re-ripping older backups. Stand alone players can pick out the differences between burn engines. I've found nero6 gives me the highest compatable and best playback. My normal backup process is using DVD Shrink to rip and autoburning with nero6,sometimes enabling AnyDVD in the background for the newer encrypted releases.

Sometimes you might have to find a combination-recipe-for certain players. I've seen the majority of those culprits, even issues with certain encryptions causing playback issues. I left out compression as another culprit-which will cause a blockiness to your picture. I try to keep that down to a minimum also.

Using my formula of: Quality drive, quality media,4x-8x burn,no multi-tasking,no sticker labels, backup target of 4360-4370 mbs. Any playback issues with mine-99% of the time it's the stand alone player's fault and I'll pick up a $20-$30 el cheapo player.

Because your pc plays it ok,that narrows it down to stand alone player.Testing them out in other stand alones,ps2's,x'box,other pcs- It'll give you a better idea of what drive/s are at fault.

Keanes: What's the brand name/model#/and the current firmware version of your DVD-RW drive? Use Nero infotool to find that info and post back.
