IMOH To start fresh Programs for purchase would be ANY DVD, Clone DVD2, Nero 7, DVDNextcopy2. Burners Plextor, Benq, Lite on, Rom Sony. Epson printer for cd DVD printing. Media Ty's, Verbatim. But depending what your doing don't forget the free programs W/ the guides here for using them. I think the best knowledge comes from the guides here that applies to the paid programs and free programs with more incite on what the programs will do that isn't spelled out in the directions.A little bit off your question but I believe it all goes hand in hand for the rewards of burning and editing. This is mo own opinion. happy burnin Chris

I learned the hard way when I started ripping and burning dvds:

Memorex media, crappy khypermedia and I/O magic 16x writers-crappy burners, bought a bootleg copy of xcopy from ebay and didn't get my money back, and the dreaded 4x speed media that was the only stuff out at the time.

Now:

1A)Quality booktyping capable drive like Plextor Px-716A or Benq 1640/1650/1655 lightscribe if you can find any of them.Booktyping helps big time with stand alone player compatability.

1B)Quality dvd-rom to do the ripping so the heavy burden is lifted from your new DVD-RW drive-it'll last a heck of a lot longer.
Dual drives makes it easier to backup and gives you a shot at ripping and burning on the fly if you desire-making sure you got quality drives and media.

Use another DVD-RW drive if you have 1 laying around just to do the ripping.

2)Almost Free? A Nero 6 OEM disc that may come with your new burner or if you have 1 laying around. Autoburns very nicely with DVD Shrink

3)Free: DVD Shrink- for single layer backups

4A)Free: DVD Decrypter- for ripping dual layer backups, burns with DVD Shrink.

4B)Free: ImgBurn for burning the DL backups after ripping with DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read.

5)$35-$40: AnyDVD running in the background for those pesky columbia and sony releases. It just sits in the background and no extra step is involved.

6) A good/ample powersupply. You need sufficient power during the backup process.

7) Extra fans/blowers. Some of these programs max out your processor, and the extra fans will help.

8)30 cents each max: Good quality plus format media like: Taiyo yuden,Hitachi maxells, verbatim, ritek.Only the plus format can be booktyped. DL media: Verbatim is all I use and advise anyone to use. That's the #1 DL media out there.

9) Plenty of ram- around 1 gb is par.

10) Epson R-220 or R-340. Staples have them at $80 for the R-220 and the R-340 runs $130. Very nice looking backups and safer than sticker labels. We get generic ink cartridges that run $1 to $3 apiece,so we safe a ton of money just in Ink.

The main thing I stress is Quality! With the quality drives and media, your success rate will be very high, better looking backups during playback, highly compatable backups,a lot less headaches, and you'll be able to burn at the faster speeds with little to worry about. A well tuned pc also helps out.

Regarding software:

Ripping: since ripit4me (free) has been introduced, there is really no need for AnyDVD unless you run it in the background with a transcoding utility that also rips (clone dvd2, Nero recode2, DVD Shrink).

Compressing: for the ultimate quality but more time consuming, dvd-rb/cce. Dvd-rb pro is $30. CCE basic is $58. For quick backups, clone dvd2 ($39), Nero recode2 (you can get this with nero6 oem suite 3 for under $20), or DVD Shrink (free).

Editing: VobBlanker (free) or dvdremake ($40 I think). I like remake because it is more user friendly imo.

Burning: Nero and/or imgburn.

About all I use anymore is ripit4me, dvdremake pro, dvd-rb pro/cce, and imgburn.

I would recommend lite-on for a good dvdrw drive since they are bitset ready, plextors are overpriced (but still the cadillac), and although benq 1640's, 1650's, and 1655's are excellent drives they are very hard to find.

Media: Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden (including those branded under another name), and hitachi.

Encoding and transcoding is very cpu intensive so the faster your cpu the faster your encoding and transcoding will be. My Core 2 Duo E6600 stock is almost twice as fast as my old 3.4ghz P4 OC'ed to 3.6ghz. 1 gig of ram is sufficient (512mhz really) but in the event that you might want to install vista as your OS down the road, it wouldn't hurt to have 2 gigs of ram since vista will use almost 1 gig by itself.
