I'm having the same exact problem. I have a Sony DRU-810A. I can play, copy and burn DVD?s fine. The drive will not recognize CD's. Audio CD?s or CD ROMs just won't play. My dilemma goes even further. I installed a CD burner in the spare bay, and the darn thing wont read CDs either. There is clearly some kind of software issue.
Hi, I also had a sony DRU-710A long ago, after a year of hard work it suddendly did not want to burn DVD+R disc any more, I sold it as faulty and then it just did not read or write anything. So you may have 2 kinds of problems:
-Software Issue: Some software in your computer is interferring with the other software in charge of making data cd readable and burnable.
-Hardware Issue: Your burner is "passing out" :(. You have no other choice other than RMA it, in order to be repaired or exchanged.
Before you take any desition, you should try to figure out what kind of problem it is. The easiest way is to connect your DVD burner to another pc, see if the problem presist. You can also try entering windows in Safe mode.
You could provide us with info like: How many years, months you have been using the burner, and if you use it really often or not. Mine probbably died because I ripped to much DVD's in it.
So I recommend you to try the solution I wrote above(try it in another pc) and tell us your result.
PD: To the other guy, yeah its clearly some kind of software issue, so to start with you could clean your PC of spyware, and that sort of stuff. Try to see if you installed recent programs that could interfere with the normal use of your CD burner
