Nero still doesn't like my 16x DVDs (illegal disk error)

So I continue to get an 'illegal disk' error when I try to burn with 16x DVDs. I just tried to back up some files with a 16x SONY, got the 'illegal disk' error, and had no problem doing the exact same backup with a 8x Staples bulk DVD.
(thank you Gwendolin for your help - your info helped me to update Nero)
So, to list out various factors -
Disks- it's not the disks, has nothing to do with the quality of the disks
Burner - NEC ND-3500A. This burner is designed to work with 16x media -especially Sony, I got a PDF from NEC detailing the different compatible medias. The fact that my firmware is older also has nothing to do with the illegal disk problem. Out of the box the burner works with 16x media.
Nero - have the latest version of Nero.
I'm guessing that it is some setting in Nero that causes Nero to reject 16x media.
Any suggestions?
Also- aside from Nero- what other good DVD burning software is out there? I'd like to see if another program has any problems with buring files or a backing up a movie from DVD Shrink.
