Please help! AVI convertig problems

I've been trying to figure out for weeks why all of a sudden I can't convert any AVI files using any converting software (winavi, dvdsanta,ect.) or video editing software(vegas,movie maker). I can't even burn an AVI to a disk. I keep getting the 'Blah blah software has encountered an error and must shut down' message. Even when I hi lite it in a folder, XP can't preveiw it and I get an error message. This is with ALL AVI files. I installed an AVI codec pack + with no results. I don't get it.
