I bought an Xbox from a friend for $20 under the assumption the power supply was shot. I got a power supply and installed it. After I hooked everything up i got christmas lights. I gave it to a friend who is more familiar with them. He has gotten it to the "you have royally screwed your xbox, please call 1-800_give me your soul" I don't have the ability to see the screen, but he doesn't see the number in the upper right hand corner, he has changed about 75% of the box and still stuck at the screen. Please help
just to be certain, when you bought it, it would not turn on at all. You replaced the power supply and now it does.
Is your friend certain all the cables and all that are plugged in tight.
did the old power supply burn out, or was it the victim of a nasty surge?
Loose solder anywhere?
burnt out chips on the board?
was it modded when you origionally bought it from your other friend?
is there a light pattern? (blinking red/green/orange etc...)
ahhh your 'friend' sounds to me like so many technicians I've been handed on my crews over the years that do what i like to call 'Troubleshooting By Mastercard' they are part swappers and really don't have a clue as to what they are doing to start with. you need to get it to a 'pro' modder and they'll fix it or tell you why it's not worth fixing.

My friend is doing the whole part swap till it works thing for free so im not goin to complaian.
He did get it working only to fry the chip he installed, forgot to install the fan. so know im back to square one.
i tend to call a spade a spade and somebody here is full of it and blowing smoke, the fan only helps keep air circulating across the processor heat sink and minimally the video chip (which still gets damn hot), forgetting to hook the fan back up doesn't fry anything, it simply allows it to overheat slowly. also you can't look at the power supply and tell if it's OK, you have to get out the good ole DVM and test it. sounds like your buddy is not slow and not fast, he's hafassed at best and will most likely never get a working box out of this ordeal.
