is there a free programme that lets me convert music on my pc to an mp3 file so i can put it on my phone ?

Audacity, DB PowerAmp, and a gazillion others. check the software section.

I would recommend DbPowerAmp. You need to pay for it when the trial runs out though, unless of course you crack it but it's a great piece of software whatever you do with it.
