My ericsson K700i is lagging/freezing.

hi ppl,
a friend of mine recently gave me a ericsson k700i. The phone has been working for the past 2 months or so. However, the phone seem to stop working. I charge the phone, then proceed to turn the phone on. I succesffullly enter my PIN, and I am then taken to the main default screen on the phone. At this point it says my battery is full, and it says on the screen "searching" (it is searching for my service provider). It is at THIS POINT that the phone stops working. The screen just freezes, and i cant do anything. I cant turn the phone off, I cant enter the menu, I cant enter my contacts list, the backlight of the screen stays turned on, etc etc. From here on I cant do anythign except wait for the phone to run out of battery power...
ANy help would be very much appreciated.
