I have an old computer with a Pentium II CPU. Currently it doesn't have an OS on it, but I have tried putting Windows 98 and Windows XP on it. I set it to boot from the CD Drive and every time it says "Failed to boot from disk". I am downloading Xubuntu to try on it, but I was wondering if it is normal for an old computer to do this.

You can always do it the long way and make the install floppies to load the OS, you can do this for XP as well as 98.

I even tried it with a Windows 98 CD and it said "Failure to boot from disk", but my copy of Xubuntu is done downloading so I'll try that. I think I'll try a new CD Drive too.

I am not sure, but I don't think there ever was a Pentium II that could boot directly from a CD. I think you had to have a Windows floppy boot disk and have it load some drivers for the CD. Once you booted to the A: drive, you then did the old type in the cd\ command and picked the CD drive that you had the Windows install disk in, and typed in Setup.exe to install the OS.

Then again, I could be having a "senior moment" and just dreamed this up. :)

win98 wasn't bootable so needed a 3.5" boot disk. check this link if don't have that boot disk. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

I really don't want to use Windows, so I want to put Xubuntu on it. Do I have to install windows first. Or can I put Xubuntu on floppies?

I may have found a solution to my "Failed to boot from CDROM" problem. It wasn't set as the master drive and it is supposed to boot from that not the slave drive.
