I've heard Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are the best brands out there at the moment.

with a DVD the quality reall matters, with a CD it is
really not such a big deal. I have mostly used Sony CD's
myself and have never had a problem.

As far as DVD brands:
Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Philips, and some Sony.
