my sansa won't convert

every time i try to convert a movie the sansa converter fails. says reason unknown. anyone use software other than SMC to convert files, then drag-and-drop to sansa in my computer. I'd like to put the movie on the harddisk then convert into a single .mov file and then drag-and-drop.
